vista sp1 not being auto installed

I have a new pc with windows vista. Windows update is set to install all
important and recommended updates. Over the last two weks I have had many
updates identified and automatically installed each day at 9am. $ days ago
the update information page showed me that there was 1 important update
available--I viewed available updates and it shows vista sp1 as available.
But everyday for the last 4 days 9am comes and goes but the automatic
downloading and installing does not happen for the vista sp1.

Anyone have any insights as to why sp1 doesn't just go ahead and be
installed automatically when it is showing as available?

I have the same issue. Please advise if anyone has a solution.

At the present time Vista SP1 needs to be installed manually. It's not yet
set to auto install.

Thany you. Is there anything I need to be alert for in doing this manually?
There must be some reason it doesn't do it automatically.

In reading this NG installing Vista SP1 affect users in different ways.
Myself I had no problems installing SP1. You should read the article that PA
Bear sent you. There is a piece in there about third party drivers, one
being Creative and a certain driver for a sound card. I corrected all driver
issues before installing.

I think you'll find that your MS references and the NG posts are outdated
now:

<QP>
Here's the timing for SP1 availability for current Windows Vista users:

• In mid-March, we will release Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Update (in
English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese) and to the download center on
microsoft.com. Customers who visit Windows Update can choose to install
Service Pack 1. If Windows Update determines that the system has one of the
drivers we know to be problematic, then Windows Update will not offer SP1.
Since we know that some customers may want to update to SP1 anyhow, the
download center will allow anyone who wants to install SP1 to do so.

• In mid-April, we will begin delivering Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Vista
customers who have chosen to have updates downloaded automatically. That
said, any system that Windows Update determines has a driver known to not
update successfully will not get SP1 automatically. As updates for these
drivers become available, they will be installed automatically by Windows
Update, which will unblock these systems from getting Service Pack 1. The
result is that more and more systems will automatically get SP1, but only
when we are confident they will have a good experience.

• The remaining languages will RTM in April.
</QP>

If Windows Update detection logic determines that a machine is ready for
Vista SP1, it *will* be offered by Windows Update. However, no Service Pack
will install automatically: The user will be prompted to approve the install
before it takes place.

I would NOT recommend attempting to install SP1 manually if it hasn't been
offered by Windows Update yet! See...

The vista SP1 now shows as an available "important"update. From earlier
notes here it would seem to me that this would only show up if windows update
had checked my system to be sure there were no problamic drivers. I do have
a Creative Zen hooked to my pc so there is a creative driver here but I do
not know if it is a problem one. I clicked on the update window to install
sp1--the download window was open 3 hours with the little green bar moving
across the scree all that time--however all during thiks time the window
showed (oKB,O% complete). After three hours with a DSL broadband connection
I hit cancel on the download.

Two day later I thought I would try again. The update still showed as
available and I hit install and then windows update did not show as trying to
download, it said installing update 1 of 1. Well I waited 2 hours and saw
nothing happening on the screen and finally had to leave and hit the stop
install button. I have no idea why I never saw any progress on the download
and no idea why it would say it was installing and nothing happen after 2
hours. My machine has 4GB RAM and 4500GB of hard drive so it cannot be a
resource issue.

Anyone have any ideas? The machine is only 4 weeks old . There is no
indication of any viruses at all.

Now that we know "the rest of ths story," see this KB article:

The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the
computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista
[When you try to install an update from Windows Update on a computer that is
running Windows Vista, you may receive the following message:

configuring updates stage 3 of 3. 0% complete

After you receive this message, the computer reverts to the screen that
displays the same message. Additionally, the update is not installed
successfully, and the computer restarts.]
