Hello,

I have the following problem that has not been resolved by any patch or
newer drivers.

When Vista goes to sleep mode - it does not always do it correctly, instead,
it freezes half way into the sleep mode. Namely, my monitor becomes off
(Video card is off), USB keyboard is off, but the processor box lights are
still on (they go off when Vista goes to sleep correctly), all the fans are
on (again they should be off if it does it correctly), and the system become
unresponsive - I can't wake it up by mouse, or power button. The only way to
get it out of this state is a reset (it will restart).

But just to be clear, it is not the problem of not being able to wake it up,
after it goes to sleep mode (it wakes up from the real sleep mode just fine)
it is a problem of GOING to the sleep mode. (S3 sleep mode, if I understand
it correctly)

It does not always happen this way, only sometimes, like one time out of
three. Also, if I put to sleep manually, rather than it goes to sleep after
some time automatically, then it has much larger chance to go to the sleep
mode correctly if Vista is somewhat busy when I press the sleep button (as
for example if I just closed large program). It is as if Vista needs to do
some extra stuff when I just exit the program, and because of it, it has
enough time for the hardware to shut off.

I also suspect, that because it freezes in such way that I need to reset the
computer, Microsoft does not receive information about some illegal
operation - it just can not detect it - it is frozen, and my computer does
not have chance to send any info to Microsoft. So, I suspect Microsoft is
unaware about this problem, even if it is wide spread.

Please help, it is quite annoying to put my computer into the sleep mode
knowing that it actually may crash and I loose all currently opened programs
and unsaved data.

Vista Home Premium, Clean install
Some programs installed (games, Nero ultra and other)
E6600, 2GB RAM, 8800GTX, RAID 0 (Intel matrix) Asus P5W DH Deluxe mobo,
Creative X-FI Xtreme Gamer Fatal1ty

I have a Dell laptop with the exact same problem. I called Dell Tech
help. They tapped into my computer and loaded a "new driver." Now it
works great. It sleeps correctly and even seems to work faster. I
suspect that Vista didn't load correctly at Dell before shipment. Good
Luck.

My shutdown process defaults to the sleep mode, I do not know how to
wake it up when it is in this mode and have to unplug it, can anyone
direct me to how to wake it up? The computer and Vista is new to me and
I cannot find any help on what to do.

Also, How can I default the shutdown process to just shut down as
opposed to sleep, My wife is too quick to hit ok and this creates a
problem, but it may not be once I understand how to bring it out of the
sleep mode

On my office computer when I jiggle the mouse it wakes up, but at home
this method does not work. Help is appreciated.
