Virus or not??

Magsowner

I am running Windows Live One Care, which I think is a great program, but on
occasion I have run some other virus or spyware scan that reports I have
dangerous files on my computer. I have been unable to find these files on my
system. Since Windows Live One Care is not reporting these, I am wondering
if they are really there and just what are these things:

Backdoor: Win32/NTRoot
Backdoor: Win32/SIVUXA
Trojan: Caiijing
 
Windows Live One Care is on the bottom of the list as far as finding virus\malware\trojan. What you are reporting as found by other scans testifies to that. It will be prudent for you to run some other on line scans and removing those that were found as you have posted

Which virus scanner did you use that gave you these 'infection' names?

Jane: You are right on it! That was the exact warning I received and I
didn't actually run it. I don't exactly know where it came from. I think I
was doing something that required me to turn off my pop up blocker and all of
a sudden this thing came up. I was suspicious of it, because of the fact
that it just came up on it's own, so I did not click on the "Remove" button.
Instead I got rid of that site and went to my Windows Live One Care and ran a
scan - Nothing showed up, so I manually went into explorer and searched for
those file names and could not find them. I am fairly computer savy, but I
am way short of being a true geek so I (have to) trust Microsoft as much, and
a little more, than all those other products and websites. I know that just
because a website may offer free scans etc. don't mean they are legitimate
and they may even be dangerous so I am cautious about using them, but I have
used some that were recommended by Kim Komando etc and have come up with some
suspicious files that Windows Live One Care didn't alert on. Where does the
average computer user, like me, go to, to get the real scoop on these
issues??? I don't even know that these other posters know any more than I
do, or may not be leading me astray.

On April 28, 2008, I also had this happen to me. I was at the couponmom.com
site when a program called "Online Spyware Spyware Destructor" popped up on
its own, and started "scanning" my computer! Then the message popped up,
"Harmful-malicious software detected-may comprise privacy-damage computer.
Backdoor:Win32/NTRoot"
Backdoor:Win32/Sivuxa.
Trojan.Caiijing

I use the lastest Norton Anti-Virus program, but I ran a full scan and found
nothing.

I did a "chat" online with Norton rep, who talked in circles about how I
could pay their consultant to check my computer. He would not even answer if
he had heard of the viruses I mentioned. After two pages, I finally told him
that I had been working with computers for over 40 years, and to stop jerking
me around. He tried to continue his "chat", but I pushed the "End Session"
I have used MANY Norton products for years, but I'm finished. Anyone know of
a good anti-virus program?

I, too, suspected a "con job". Thanks so much for any more information or
advice from any of you. I am a disabled senior citizen and am certaining no
expert on today's advanced technology (I'm using Windows XP), but experience
and common sense does help.

(PS Spunky (my user name) was my "certified helper animal" who passsed away
Oct 15, 2007. I am still grieving over him. It get's easier, but my heart
still cries because he was really an "angel" and I loved "my baby" so much
and I miss him. Please don't get upset with me - I now live alone and needed
to reach out and tell someone. Thanks!)

First:- I understand your pain at the loss of your friend. I am an animal
lover and I know how much pain you can feel at the loss of a friend you
accepts you and loves you unconditionally.
My original post goes back to August 2007 and I have learned a lot since
then. First of all:- No two so called "Experts" seem to be able to agree on
anything. Some of the people on this board will put down Windows Live One
Care and praise Norton's, while another will put down Norton's and praise
another one. I have been using Windows Live One Care for 3 years and I like
it much better than any of the others I have used. I have tons of stuff on
my computer:- Games, music and photo programs, office programs, you name it-
and I find that the Windows program is simple and easy to use and keeps me
out of trouble. My best friend has the same brand PC, only newer and with a
faster processor etc. than mine, but her PC is so slow that you can take a
nap while it opens e mail etc. She is running Norton's!! What can I say?

I have never had a virus problem. Almost any of the spyware or virus
detection scans that you can download and run for free off of the internet
will find something that is "potentially" harmful. The Windows program
includes firewall, antivirus, spyware tuneup and backup in a user friendly
package, and you can install it on a total of 3 different computers for one
price. You can download a 30 day free trial to see if you like it before you
purchase it. The Microsoft download site also offers several free scans that
you can use. Windows Defender is a good one.

However, I do use two other programs that I like. Spyware doctor is non
intrusive and I like the information it gives me about what it finds, and you
can pick and choose what you want it to fix. Spyware Doctor is a free
program from PCtools.com. I also purchased a program for about $30.00 from
Uniblue.com called Speed Up My PC and I run it occasionally. It is basically
an optimizer and gets rid of junk files and stuff that are not spyware or
anything that would get picked up by an antivirus or spyware detector.

I'm still not sure if these viruses are truly on my computer OR if this was a
hoax by "Online Spyware Destructor", the program that popped up. Does anyone
know for sure?

"Online Spyware Destructor" started scanning my computer, with no clicks
from me.
The only thing I did was the Alt-print screen to try to capture what was
going on.

I was able to capture the web address:
"http://scan.spywaredestructor.com/scan.php?landid=1&depid=maxc%5Fdr08&cid=2271&parid=mc%5F307628141"

Does anyone know anything (good or bad) about this company or website?

I also captured the the red, white and blue "box" with the "WARNING!!!" in
the blue strip of the box and an "X" on a "Shield-shape" with the words
""Harmful and malicious software detected" across the red strip of the box.
Then below, in the white area of the box, it stated: "Online Scanner
detected programs that may compromise your privacy or damage your computer."
Below that was the table showing this:

Backdoor:Win32/NTRoot" High
Backdoor:Win32/Sivuxa. High
Trojan.Caiijing High

So if anyone knows the truth - about the company about these viruses and
why the program chose to start scanning my computer without my permission -
please advise - I'm bewildered!

The "virus scan" is FAKE. It's merely a flash(*.swf) file to make you
believe your system is infected, so you will buy their program...
You should go to a site that specializes in removal of malware, and find
out if your system has been compromised.
