For various reasons I have often turned off my Avast! AV or my ZA firewall,
but I never turn them both off at the same time.
If I want to make changes that are self-contained within my computer and
don't need to be connected to the internet, I merely switch off my cable
modem. Never had a virus, or a significant spyware problem.
BTW, I will use Windows 98se until they pry it from my cold dead hands --
apologies to the NRA gun nuts.

It's a risk, but one I have taken here many times with no ill effects. I
have
disabled my AV countless times during installations, and have never once
unplugged
my router or modem during that period. In fact I've browsed web sites with
the AV
disabled a number of times.
Still, my bad for not laying that out in my step-by-step.
Did the disappearing icon issue resolve itself with a reboot, or no?
