What does USB Root Hub mean?

I have four listings in Device Manager for USB ports, and then there
are four USB Root Hub listings.

Do two of them change whenever I turn on the printer or insert a
camera into a USB slot?

The USB hardware is configured so that there is a Controller ( Either
a USB-1(1.) or Enhanced USB 2.0 ). The controller hosts the Root
Hubs which is turn actually support the devices plugged into them. The
USB 1(.1) Root hubs normally have 2 ports each and the enhanced
Root Hubs (USB 2.0) have 4 ports ( Sockets ).

I don't see 'USB ports' in the Device Manager, unless
something is connected. To see for yourself how things are
connected, resort the Device Manager
Menu : View : 'Devices by connection'

Plug in, turn on, drop out.
