Hi,
When I try to start my Dell Dimension 5100 the light on the keyboard is on
and the keyboard is working until I get to the sign on screen. Then all the
USB'sseem to to stop working and the mouse and keyboard stop working.
Because of this I am unable to get past the screen. It also doesn't work in
safe mode but does work if I use a BartPE startup disc.
I have looked in the bios and there isn't an option to enable or disable
USB's. I have tried to restore all BIOS settings to default a#but this
hasn't made any difference.

How can I get my USB's working again?

One of my own PCs won't start when certain USB devices
are connected. I then disconnect them, start Windows, then
reconnect them.

I can't start windows past the log on screen as both the mouse and keyboard
are USB.

the light on the mouse is on but it will not move. I have also changed it
for another and also plugged into all the USB's including the ones on the

You might try different USB ports. I have a Dell that insists the USB
keyboard be in a particular port.

If the mouse and KB work initially at boot and only stop working when
Windows has started loading then the problem isn't in BIOS it is Windows
that has disabled the USB drivers for whatever reason. If BIOS settings were
the problem the mouse and KB wouldn't work until after Windows drivers for
them were loaded, or at all.

Apart from trying system restore or Last Known Good from the Safe Mode
startup screen (before Windows loads) you'll need to be able to access
Windows before you can fix any drivers etc.. USB mice often come with a PS2
adapter you could use, otherwise you'll need to get a PS2 mouse as well as a
cheap PS2 keyboard so that you can access Windows again. Don't hot plug PS2
devices, always turn off the PC first.

thanks for the advice. These cheap Dell computers don't come with PS2
connections. I tried 3 different mice and a couple of keyboards (all
wired.). Maybe I should have tried a wireless one that I have here but
instead I have just done a XP repair install and it is now sorted. I have
also had to take one of the pieces of ram out too as this seemed to be
causing problems even though all the tests said that it was OK.

The problem is sorted now so thanks again for all the advice.

At least you got it sorted.

A PC without floppy drives or COM ports can be a PITA at times too. :)
