I have an Acer TravelMate 4230, with Vista SP2 Installed, Mobile Intel(R)

945GM/GU/PM/GMS/940GML/943GML and Intel(R) 945GT Express Processor to DRAM

Controller - 27A0, Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) Ultra ATA Storage

Controllers - 27DF, WDC WD 1200UE-22KVT0 ATA Device, 1.5 GB Ram.

An error occurred the other day where windows said that it could not read

the HD, and after that the problem started where Windows cannot read any USb

device (not even the built-in cam). It finds a device but cannot recognize

it. I ran a check disk but nothing changed.. Anything else I could do to fix

it?

The internal hard drive (HD) is not using a USB connection.

Microsoft has not design the Windows to boot directly off a USB

device. If you had a boot problem and not a USB device access

problem, I would suggest taking the laptop to a repair centre. It

seems to be having some hardware problems.

Reinstall Vista or upgrade to win7 by this occasion.

Anything else may be just waste of time and risk to lose your data.

Of course, you can also call a technician.

Startup Repair is on the System Recovery Options menu, which is on the Windows installation disc. Startup Repair might also be installed on your hard disk if your computer has preinstalled recovery options. Startup Repair might prompt you to make choices as it tries to fix the problem, and if necessary, it might restart your computer as it makes repairs.

If you have a Windows installation disc:

? Insert the installation disc.

? Restart your computer

? boot to the installation CD or DVD.

? Select your language the next

? Click Repair your computer .

? Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next ..

If your computer has preinstalled recovery options:

? Restart Computer

? Press and hold F8 as your computer boots up. You will need to reboot again if you see the Windows logo. That just means it did not work the first time.

? On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Repair your computer , and then press ENTER

? Select a keyboard layout, and then click Next .

? Select a user name and enter the password, and then click OK .

On the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair .
