USB devices not detected

Hi,

For some unknown reason, all my USB ports, front (2 ports) and back (4
ports) of tower, don't work anymore. Might have removed my iPod or other USB
device without selecting Safe to remove device in taskbar?

Anyways, when i check the device status for the USB controller under the
Device Manager it says the device is working properly. I tried uninstalling
the drivers and reinstalling them but it still didn't help.

I checked the BIOS to see if my USB settings were okay and they are enabled.

I plugged a USB light (the kind that lights up a laptop) and the light
works, so there is power. My iPod seems to be charging too when plugged in
the USB ports but iTunes doesn't detect my iPod. Nothing appears in the
taskbar anymore when I plug a USB device like it used to. I also tried
plugging my USB memory stick and it lights up red instead of blue and is not
detected by the computer. My Brother printer is also not being detected, so
now I can't print anymore...

I searched internet but can't find anything that will help resolve this
problem.

Any ideas?

I run on Windows XP SP2.

Thanks,
tbof

Use System Restore to return the machine to a point before the
problem became apparent.

Some weeks ago I had the same problem with a laptop. It turned
out that the USB controller must have failed. When I used a PCMCIA
card with 4 USB ports, things worked perfectly well.

Hi Pegasus,

Yes, tried the system restore to an earlier point and it didn't help. I
tried repairing Windows with partial reinstall and it seems when lookng and
the insstall log that some plug and play files and USB files were not
deleted. I might have to reinstall Windows form scratch :(

Any other ideas before I reinstall?

Thanks,

As I said before: Borrow a PCMCIA card with USB ports.
If the USB controller on the motherboard is cactus then
reinstalling Windows won't get you anywhere.

Sorry, I didn't get that the first time. Excuse my ignorance but is a PCMCIA
card a card you insert in a PCI slot? I have 4 usb ports on the back of my
tower. When I opened it I realised the card was not actually inserted in any
PCI slots but hooked to the motherboard via some cable and connector. I'll
try to see if I can find a USB card I can connect in an empty PCI slot.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Forget about the PCMCIA card - I thought you had a laptop.
A PCI card will no nicely. Alternatively, if you know someone
who uses an Acronis product then you could boot your machine
with their recovery CD. Since it includes a USB driver, it will
tell you immediately if the USB controller is working or not.

One more thing,

I checked my BIOS configuration again. Here's what it's set to:

-----------------------------

Module Version - 2.23.0 - 5.3

USB Devices Enabled: None <--- (not sure why - can't edit this field?)

USB Function: [8 USB Ports]
Legacy USB Support: [Auto] <--- (not sure if this should be set to Enabled,
Auto or Disabled)
USB 2.0 Controller: [Enabled]
USB 2.0 Controller Mode : [FullSpeed]

I'll see if I can buy a USB PCI card but I don't feel like spending too
much. Will see if I can find someone that could lend me one for a test.

Thanks,
tbof

Those BIOS settings look fine to me.

Probably because you don't have 'Legacy USB Support' set to Enabled or
you're not using a USB keyboard (see below).

If you have a USB mouse and/or keyboard (including wireless ones), set this
to Enabled
