usb device unrecognised

Ok folks would love some help with this problem which is driving me mad.
Win xp sp2. usb 1.1 built in and 2.o on pci card

A few weeks ago i tried to plug a new thumb drive in and it was not
recognised and what ever I did I could not get it to load drivers. Not from
any location or cd. If I plug an existing and already installed device into
another usb port it will also not work and be unrecognised. I have manually
installed new drivers but when i direct the usb device to it through device
manger it will not see it. Its like windows has lost its ability to see the
the usb drivers even though they are clearly there??

have practically worn my fingures out googling and still not any neaer to
fixing it? please help

To summarize, you have USB devices that work on other systems, but not on
this one?

XP comes with drivers for USB ports, and you should not have to use drivers
from a CD or website.

In Device Manager, remove all USB ports. Right click, choose Uninstall.
Power down right away.

Open the case, and remove the add-on card. Power the system back up, but
instead of booting into Windows, go into the BIOS and make sure USB is
actually enabled. Save changes and exit.

Restart and log in as Adminstrator (in Safe Mode if you have to, for Home),
then shut down. The built-in ports will probably reload, and that's fine.

Put the USB card back in, but in another slot. You may have to swap with
another piece of hardware. Restart, and this time wait for all hardware to
be detected. Attach only one device to one USB port. Is it detected?
Can you try another add-on card? these are inexpensive.

yep done all that, even tried without the pci card at all. but there was no
change at all. my existing USB devices (6 port powered hub, external hd &
web cam) only worked if I put them in the exact position they were before
(e.g. driver already installed) I have three USB thumb drives which I can
plug in on the front port and they work fine. if I put a new one in it is
unrecognised! if I put the a new device in any port including the 6
externally powered ports nothing is recognised.

thanks Elmo but no help either. have now installed article ID:892050 hotfix
but still to no effect

XP shouldn't ask for drivers for any thumb drive. If it does, see this:

Yes, that's from a site I previously sent, but you may not have realized
that was the initial problem.
