Ok folks would love some help with this problem which is driving me mad.
Win xp sp2. USB 1.1 built in and 2.o on pci card

A few weeks ago I tried to plug a new thumb drive in and it was not
recognised and what ever I did I could not get it to load drivers. Not from
any location or cd. If I plug an existing and already installed device into
another USB port it will also not work and be unrecognised. I have manually
installed new drivers but when I direct the USB device to it through device
manger it will not see it. Its like windows has lost its ability to see the
USB drivers even though they are clearly there??

have practically worn my fingers out googling and still not any nearer to
fixing it? please help

Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools Computer Management /Disk
Management(with the device plugged in )
You should see your USB device
Right click on it & go to "change drive letter & paths"
Assign it a different drive letter than what it is.
Sounds like you have a cd or dvd drive that has already been assigned to the
same drive letter that the USB device is trying to take.

Hi Gary,

it is not listed in the disk management as it is 'not recognised' i.e.
yellow question mark.

I'm not familiar with a yellow question mark in "Disk Management-only in
"Device Manager" so I'm wondering if you are looking in the right place,or
not. Not saying that it can't be there- I've just never seen it & admit that
I don't really know that much at all about Disk Management myself. It's just
that I had the same problem at work with my USB thumb drive because there
were other things occupying the particular drive letter that my USB Device
wanted to take & it was as easy as assigning it a different drive letter.
Good luck & keep us posted as there are some brilliant minds that come here
& I'm sure that someone can help you .

Hi Gary, I understand what you are saying as I frequently have to change
drive letters in disk management at work. What I am saying is that it is not
listed there as it is not installed in device manager

Aaah-I see what you're saying now. What shows in Device Manager under
"Enhanced Host Controller"?
Is the yellow question mark there? That would lead me to believe that it's a
driver issue.Have you tried updating the driver (if that's the case)?
Like I say-I'm pretty much*hit & miss* when it comes to those matters ,so
I'm sorry that I'm not much help there. I do have a limited knowledge of
computers & am learning more & more every day (mostly from here & trial &
error)but I was addressing the drive letter issue when it may very well be
(& sounds like it) a USB driver problem,or even something else.
Many of the MVPs recommend this site:
http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbtrouble_e.html for USB troubleshooting & you
may have better luck there.
Like I say, there's a lot of more qualified ,more experienced ,seasoned users
that can probably nail the problem right off the bat & I do hope that
happens soon for you, if the site doesn't yield any solutions.
Good luck jamieT & I'm sorry that I wasn't any help to you regarding this. I
still feel that it'll end up being a simple fix & perhaps , one that we
would say "now why didn't I think to do that?"
~Gary
