usb connection slow error

hi well i have a card reader connected to a usb connection but when i plug it
in it says i should connect it to a fast series 2 usb connector? i have tried
all the usb connections with no success and it says i have many fast
connections on my comp. The hardware has been re-installed and the same
happens. i'm using windows ep with a ga-vm800pmc pentium 4 motherboard. Is
there a fix for this?
 
Yes there is. Your USB ports are controlled by Chipset drivers for the
Motherboard - which you should of installed first thing after Windows XP
loaded for the first time - and you were on your new desktop. You can still
install these if you have the CD that came with your motherboard.

If your system came with Windows XP pre-installed, you should check a
"Drivers CD" that might of shipped with it, or even at the PC Manufacturers
website for any updated drivers for use with your particular motherboard.

I had a similar problem and was getting the same message on myToshiba
laptop - after I set up XP Home Ed on it. Only I had to download outdated
chipset drivers from Toshiba for Win2000 in order to fix the problem.

This error can mean one of a number of things.

1. That you have connected your USB2 [1] peripheral to a USB1[1] port when
USB2 ports are available on the machine. (This does not sound like what you
have done.)

2. That you have connected your USB2 peripheral to a USB2 port, but the USB2
part of the port is damged [2], and the connection reverts to the USB1 part
of the port. (You have probably eliminated this by trying other ports)

3. That you have connected your USB2 peripheral to a USB 2 port, but the
USB2 part of the peripheral is damaged, and the connection reverts to the
USB1 part of the port. (This is possible)

4. That you have connected your USB2 peripheral to a USB2 port, but the
cable is incapable of transmitting reliable at the High speed (due to being
of poor quality; a low speed cable; damaged etc.), and the connection
reverts to USB1 operation. (Try another decent quality cable)

[1] For the purposes of this discussion I use 'USB2' to refer to connection
to the high speed EHCI (480 Mbps) ports, and 'USB1' to refer to conection to
the OHCI (12 and 1.5 Mbps) ports.

[2] A USB2 port or peripheral actually contains the electronics to support
both USB2 and an USB1, the connection being routed internally according to
the communication speed. Thus one can be faulty or damaged, but the other
may work. If the USB2 part is faulty, the device will only work at USB1
speeds. If the USB1 part is faulty, the device won't work at all.

Failure to install the USB2 drivers will not generate this error message.
The system just reverts to a standard USB1 system.
