loaded with XP Home SP2, fully patched.

Thanks.

Does that computer detect any other USB devices, on that USB port?

Yes it does detect other USB devices, even other storage devices like MP3s.

That's a strange one. Usually if a USB device isn't recognized in a
computer with known good ports, that device is bad. But not in this case.
Something in the registery sounds messed up.
Not a lot of things to try here - but one would be to uninstall SP2 and try
it. (http://support.microsoft.com/KB/875350)

Plug in the disk drive.

Now while holding down the windows key (between [Ctrl] and [Alt]) press the
[Pause/Break] key. Select the 'Hardware' tab and then the Device Manager
button. Now look to see if any of the devices have a yellow '!' icon over
them (particularly a disk drive or an unknown device). If you have, right
click on it a select 'unistall'. Close the device manager. Now unplug your
drive and after a few seconds, plug it in again. With luck it should
install as a new device. With a lot of luck, it should work.

Strewth! This is the equivalent of taking you engine out just because you
have a flat tyre.
