Uploading still pics from my dv camera to my pc

I need help in setting up Windows XP Professional so that I can upload still
pics from my JVC GR-D72US video camera to the C:/my documents/my pictures
subdirectory. I am using an USB cable connection.

When I connect the cable and turn on the camera, the Digital Video Device
window opens, and the only two options available there are 1. Edit Video
Using Pinnacle Studio (My dvd rendering software) or 2. Take no action.

There is no option to transfer the stills (slides) to my computer. How do I
set this up in XP pro so that I can transfer the files? If I use the Scanner
and Camera Wizard is asks if I want to use my Epson scanner or my Generic AVC
Complian DV Camera.

When I select the DV Camera, it shows an application error, and the program
stops responding. One time I was able to get it to work, and it transferred
all 30+ of my stills as one file instead of individual files.

Could the problem be that I do not have Windows Moviemaker installed and am
using Pinnacle Studio Plus 10.7 instead?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Have a Merry Christmas.

Open C:/my documents/my pictures.
Then when you have plugged in your camera go to 'My computer' your camera
will be one of the removable drives > double click on it and you should be
able find your pictures. then just drag and drop them into 'My Pictures'.

Or if you have saved the pictures/slides on a memory stick within the camera
then take it out and plug it into a card reader that is attached to a USB
port on the computer and carry on as above.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, Lenny, i'll give it a try. I used to be able to select the option to
copy the slides from my camera to my hd by just plugging in the usb cable
(back in the days of XP Home Edition). A dialog box would open up much like
the dialog box that opens when you insert a cd/dvd into the drive.

I installed Movie Maker which gave me the option of using Movie Maker
instead of Pinnacle's Studio Plus, but could not import the slides still.

Again, Thanks.

I think you are attempting to transfer still images from the
Camcorders flash memory card via Firewire - no can do.
To transfer still images from the cam, connect via USB.
Then open any image editing software,
In chosen application, goto Toolbar and chose the option
within that application, such as "New", "Import" or "open" etc
then navigate to USB connected camcorder,
The firewire connection is for transfering/importing DV footage.

Sister Mary,

You are right! In traceing down my connections, I discovered that was
exactly what I was doing. I connected the camera via a usb cable, heard the
connection tone, and the camera lcd displayed on the screen USB MODE. There
were two icons, one labeled PC and the other labeled M. There was a message
on the bottom that said "accessing files", and two sets of arrows displayed
between the two icons.

That's as far as it gets. Nothing else happens, and the two icons remain on
the lcd. I looking at windows explorer (or my computer) I do not see any
drive letter designated for my dv camera. I then right clicled on my
computer, selected "Manage" then selected Disk Management. There, the
installed devices includes a drive "G" which is designated as my dv camera. I
have two 250gb hdd's that are labeled C, D, & E, and a dvd burner labeled F,
so G would be the proper drive letter for the dv camera.

Therefore I conclude that the pc and the dv camera are "shaking hands" but
are not completing the connection. At this point, I don't know what to try
next.

Suggestions, anyonw?

Merry Christmas,

You have to set the camcorder to the memory card - the USB
connection cannot recognise anything else but the memory card
and that is for you to discern how to set cam to "out" via USB.
If you don't have the instruction manual then post back with exact
make and model and I'll look it up.

Or try this:

Shutdown
Connect powered off Cam via USB
Set dial/switch on cam to "memory" or "USB"
Boot PC
Once XP fully loaded
Power on the camcorder
Does an icon appear in system tray identifying cam?
If not - shutdown and power off cam
If connected to a USB card that also has another device
connected, or to a hub with other devices, disconnect
other decvices (maybe a conflict?),
With just cam connected via USB, try again.

Thanks, I'll work on it some more. The camera is a JVC GR-D72US camera. I'll
check to settings in the camera to see if there is anything I am missing.

One thing that I have not tried yet, but will try next. I have a USB 2.0
card in my system. I plugged the camera into a built in USB port on the front
of the computer. I will switch the connection to the USB 2.0 card to see if
this clears up the problem.

Thanks again,

Just and update to let everyone know what is going on.

I am working with online technical support on this problem. You can access
the camera through the Start/Run menu, but you cannot access it through "My
Computer" or "Windows Explorer". They are trying to figure out why this is
happening. We also tried to access a Jump/Flash drive and the only way was
through the Run/Start menu. This isolates the problem to the computer and not
the USB port or the Camera.

They worked about three hours yesterday on this problem, the technician
taking control of my computer. The problem has been passed on to an Advanced
Technical Support person, who will call me back this afternoon or tomorrow.

I'll let you know the outcome of this problem.

Final post on this subject.

After working with Tech Support, we finally agreed that there was a corrupt
file in the OS somewhere. I wound up reformatting my HD, then reinstalling XP
Pro. This solved the problem.

Thanks to all for your support and suggestions. Happy New Year!
