updates wont install

hi all,
sorry of the double post. i hit the post button too soon.
using xp home on a dell deminion 4500.
about a month ago i had to had to wipe my hard disk due to some pretty
serious problems i was having. I added no new hardware and reinstall all of
the software that came with my pc. everything went as expected. no hitches or
glitches.
unforutnatly now xp will not install any updates from microsoft. I have it
set to go look for updates. i get a message telling me that update are
available. i click install, it trys but then displays a message saying that
some update could not be installed. no reason why. I have 84 updates waiting
but they never install, the list just keeps growing.
any advice would be appreciated.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by
using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation
