Updates for Windows 98 - where?

Does anyone have the URL for Windows 98 updates on the Microsoft website, or
any other website.

I installed Windows 98 from CD on an older laptop that I still use, and want
to add Windows98 updates. This used to be on the Microsoft website. I can
no longer find it. I had the Windows 98 updates in a separate file on my new
computer -- for burning to CD -- but I must have accidently deleted them. I
went back to the Microsoft website to download the updates once more, but
could not find them using the links that Microsoft provides.

first thing you need to do is install IE6

then you can just go to the update page and download all the updates

Isn't the "Catalog" link in the left pane?

1. Download/Install IE6 SP1:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6

NB: Close all open applications (anything with a taskbar icon) and disable
anti-virus application prior to installing IE6 SP1...and make sure you
reboot twice afterwards!

2. Now go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and update away.

NB: Support for Win98 ended on 11 Jul-06. No updates for Win98 have been
released since then.

Not enough detail here, philo, to tell what you mean. Therefore, not helpful.

That was a good idea Brian. Unfortunately, it appears that the web page you
refer to has gone away ... at least I could not find it. I am trying to find
the Windows 98 updates using a computer running Windows XP and in its wisdom,
Microsoft has automated updating so that I only get the Windows XP update
page now. The Copyright 2004 web page shown in the site you refer to seems
to be no more. If you know otherwise, let me know ... I will need a URL.
Thanks.

Thanks John, but the site you mention is for 98SE. I need updates for 98.

Thanks PA Bear, I will try that. Maybe it will work. I tried going to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
and Microsoft reroutes me to a v6 update page (v6 is Windows XP) because the
computer I am using to access the MS website is running Windows XP.

What I want to do is download the updates and put them in a folder. Then I
can write them to a CD and archive the CD with the updates. When the website
downloads and installs everything for us, we are at the mercy of the website
deciding to obsolete everything, then when it does we can't access updates
any more. So I will try what you suggest ... and hope for the best ... the
best being that the process is not completely automated like it is with
Windows XP.

First off, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

You want a URL, you've got a URL:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

It won't work on an XP machine, it switches to v6. You'll need a 98/SE machine and
a thumb drive or other storage device to transport and transfer them to where ever
your going to place them.

Another thought would be to install VPC 2007 on XP and then install 98 on VPC.

That is *all* you have to do.
The reason the update site did not work for you is that you need to install
IE6 first.

you can get it here if you want

http://www.updatexp.com/download-ie6.html

once IE6 is installed all you need to do is go to the windows update site

just google for: windows update

once there...you will see that Microsoft still has the win98 updates avail

Well, you might have mentioned this in your first post, BR.

I'd recommend using the Win98 machine, with IE6 SP1, installed to do the
updating. Only the Windows Update website will be able to tell what, if
any, updates the machine needs.

I am no longer watching this thread.

I have a two CD set I send to people that has all the Updates for Win98,
Win98SE and WinME. Write to me for instructions (I ask $3 to cover costs.)
The first CD is a copy of the Feb. 2004 Security Updates CD, and the second
contains all the rest of the updates after those ones.

Hi philo, You are making assumptions about what I am doing and this is why
your suggestions are presumptuous and don't make sense. I am already running
IE7 (on a Windows XP machine) ! This is why, at some level, your suggestion
to install IE6 and then just go makes no sense. Why am I using an XP
machine? Because for one, the computer that has 98 installed on it (an older
laptop) does not have a CD burner (and this is what I want to do ... burn the
w98 updates on a CD for archival purposes) and second is that in the not too
distant past we could download fixes for any operating system regardless of
the operating system on the computer we were using. I appreciate your
wishing to help, however. So thanks.

Hey Gary, that would be terrific. Yes, please send me instructions. I would
like your CDs.

I had the W98 updates at one time on my XP machine, thought I had written
them to CD, but did not (apparently) and then accidently deleted them. Since
you have them on CDs already I would enjoy receiving a copy. - BR -

ME is universally considered to be the second worst (after
Vista) MS OS ever released, so I definitely would not bother
with it. So the above link is all you need, plus it is bound to
be more /objective/ than whatever Mr. Terhune (a MS MVP) has
cooked in his burner. And it saves you the $3 (although that is
a VERY reasonable and fair price).
