Updates can not be installed

Even though I hate it, I have pretty well accepted the fact that
Microsoft, not I, controls the computer which I bought with my money,
and the software which I bought and paid for.
For that reason, I reluctantly turned automatic updates "on".

At times, though, it gets to be too much.
For some time now, my computer advises me to install Security Update
for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB928366)

I say "OK" - it goes though the motions, and tells me "Updates are
being installed".
Then I get the following error message:
"The following updates were not installed:
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack
1 (KB928366)"
When I click on "Close", the panel closes; but in a few minutes I get
another message "Updates are ready for your computer". Then, the
whole cycle repeats itself.
Any advice?
About time for Linux, or for a Mac?

This is the reply MS send me
The issue can be caused by a damaged .NET Framework component. At this time,
let's refer to the following steps to troubleshoot this issue:

Step 1: Download Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp utility

============================================

1. Visit:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe

2. Save the file to your Desktop.

3. Install this tool on your computer.

Step 2: Remove .NET Framework

========================

1. Click Start -> (All) Programs->Windows Installer Clean Up.

2. Please locate any .NET Framework software and remove it.

3. Restart the computer and see if the problem still exists.

Then go to the XP update site and let it scan for updates

That's what I've read is the way MS is suggesting the issue be dealt with.

Hi,
If you have Spybot installed, running in the background is a feature found
in the 'Tools' section called 'Teatimer' and 'Resident'.
I had to temporarly untick these to get the updates from Micosoft Update to
install.
Similar to your experience, the update loaded, but did not install. Seems
Spybot stopped it.

Thanks to all who tried to help
I found that I did not have Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1
installed, at least not all of it.
So, I installed it, as well as V 2 and V 3.
Then, I removed them all.
Bill Gates still kept pestering me to install the Security Update
for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB928366),
and it still would not "take". So, in desperation, I said "screw it" -
IOW: don't bother me again.

Everything seems to be OK now.

Cheers!
