Whilst installing update KB2791765 on my Acer Aspire 5951G Laptop I received a pop-up window with a message "Program Compatibility Assistant this program has known compatibility issues."

It gave the option to check online for a solution so I clicked the button marked "Check for solutions online" and was taken to an Acer website where, after checking that my laptop model was listed, allowed me to download a solution.

The update finished apparently and gave a message that the installation had been unsuccessful and when I clicked the finish button, the laptop screen went blank. The laptop appeared to be seriously damaged by this process and I have been unable to obtain
any response from the screen ever since.

I sent it to Acer for repair and they advise me that it needs a replacement main board, the total repair bill coming to £260, apart from the £55 spent sending it back for a diagnosis of the fault.

After speaking to the Acer repair people thay said that the timing of the fault occuring is simply coincidence, despite the fact that the laptop is only 16 months old and is only used very occassionally.
I think that it is quite some coincidence that the Acer update failed a matter of seconds before the laptop went faulty.
Is it reasonable to assume that such a thing should not occur, and as anyone else heard of similar things happening before.
