vista home prem sp1, on new laptop- came with it. if i click on windows
update in control panel, nothing ever displays but the spinning circle (i.e.
hourglass replacement).
looking at the log i can see something occured on 5/27, since then the panel
will not display.

Here is a portion from the log, any ideas on how I can get this back to
working? Looks lke restoring prior to this date is not an option. is there
another place that stores the updates which have taken place, as I can't
bring up the windows update control panel screen. if I could see the
updates, maybe i could back them out one at a time, or is the only option
going back through the log. i.e. how do you uninstall an update when the
update control panel won't display?

thanks.

The above indicates that the system is now waiting in line [in a queue]
and when it's number comes up, the updates will be downloaded.
Please do this ... go to the WU in the Control Panel and check for
updates once more. Then post the *end* of the WindowsUpdate.log as that
is the section that contains the latest entries.
Post the last 50 or so lines of the log, please.

Re: update from control panel never displays anything - Error 0x8

Try this, Mike:
Automatic Updates and WindowsUpdate Reset tool
http://www.codeplex.com/aureset/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=13656

The download link is on the bottom of the above page.
After the download completes, close all open programs and browsers.
* Right * click au_client_toolv77a_redist.exe. choose ' Run as
administrator ' and then reboot afterwards.

Did that fix 'things' ?

Re: update from control panel never displays anything - Error 0x8

Ok, here is the status, the script ran but had a few errors.
first couldn't stop the BITS service so it couldn't cancel the pending
jobs.
Next the load library failed for many
LoadLibrary failed with error 126: C:\Windows\system32\muweb.dll
LoadLibrary failed with error 126: C:\Windows\system32\gpkcsp.dll
LoadLibrary failed with error 126: C:\Windows\system32\msxml.dll
LoadLibrary failed with error 126: C:\Windows\system32\msxml2.dll
LoadLibrary failed with error 126:
C:\Windows\system32\mucltui.dllDllRegisterServer not exported
Register type library failed: 0x80029C4A
C:\Windows\system32\qmgr.dll
LoadLibrary failed with error 126: C:\Windows\system32\sccbase.dll
LoadLibrary failed with error 126: C:\Windows\system32\slbcsp.dll
LoadLibrary failed with error 126: C:\Windows\system32\wuaueng1.dll
LoadLibrary failed with error 126: C:\Windows\system32\wucltui.dll
LoadLibrary failed with error 126: C:\Windows\system32\wuweb.dll
LoadLibrary failed with error 126: C:\Windows\system32\initpki.dll---Done
Registering LoadLibrary failed with error 126:
C:\Windows\system32\initpki.dll---Done Registering

the control panel still would not come up so i ran SCF /scannow.
it reported some errors which seemed to be centered around .ini files which
seem to be a known issue.
I haven't checked the whole thing yet as it is a big file.
rebooted and the CONTROL PANEL/windows update now displays something, and
when i hit the button to check for updates I can see the progress bar, BUT
now it never returns nothing.

so we are half way there, at least it functions and i can see which updates
were applied before.
also it no longer says microsoft updates, but windows updates. i had it
setup to get all updates (like office 2007, originally).

thanks, mike

Re: update from control panel never displays anything - Error 0x8

From the windowsupdate.log it looks like it's working, so it might just be
the UI thats having issues.
I even see that it prompts you to istall the downloaded updates at shutdown:
2008-06-10 08:43:38:224 1216 42c Shutdwn user declined update at shutdown

Can we see if we get errors when we run a few of the steps manually?

First, do you get errors when you do:
Net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
(do net start bits and net start wuauserv to start them again).

How about when you try to register those dlls manually? Example:
regsvr32.exe mucltui.dll

Ok, here is the status, the script ran but had a few errors.
first couldn't stop the BITS service so it couldn't cancel the pending
jobs.
Next the load library failed for many
LoadLibrary failed with error 126: C:\Windows\system32\muweb.dll
LoadLibrary failed with error 126: C:\Windows\system32\gpkcsp.dll
LoadLibrary failed with error 126: C:\Windows\system32\msxml.dll
LoadLibrary failed with error 126: C:\Windows\system32\msxml2.dll
LoadLibrary failed with error 126:

Here is the most recent log from windows update...

Re: update from control panel never displays anything - Error 0x8

Yes, he can contact me, although I don't post my email here.

anti virus is zone alarm anti-virus and firewall 2007 for Vista, that seems
to be current.

Re: update from control panel never displays anything - Error 0x8

Hi Eddie,

I never get a prompt to install anything upon shutdown. (or i would). The
windows update panel just has the searching for updates green bar and never
stops searching, also the icon never appears in the system tray either. I
know it used to prompt me to install, and also upon shutting down it would
show a shutdown icon with the system shield which would notify me of
installs, but that doesn't occur anymore.

net stop of either service says the service is stopping
....................................... and then says the service could not
be shut down. I can get the exact wording tomorrow if needed. on the plus
side event viewer shows the communication happening again for windows update,
which wasn't working since 5/27 until i tried the script, so it is getting
better..

the registration of dlls, this is strange, i tried the first 3 and they do
not exist in the system32 directory, I checked another laptop and those dlls
don't exist on it either in system32 directory. remember i am using vista
premium sp1. Only thing I can figure is that the script tries to register
dll's reguardless of operating system, and doesn't care if they don't exist.

Mow asked what security i am using, zone alarm antivirus 2007 for vista.

thanks for the help..

Re: update from control panel never displays anything - Error 0x8

Yes the script does try to register all the possible dlls even if they are
not preset.
wucltui.dll should register however.

In the c:\aulogs directory there will be two cab files. Can you open the
audcomlog.txt and paste in the
====== Testing components ======
section to this thread?

I'm also currious if we boot into safe mode with networking if we would
have more luck with the tool (or using msconfig to disable 3rd party
services)

Re: update from control panel never displays anything - Error 0x8

ZA Antivirus contains a firewall, too. Has it been disabled ?
I'd be willing to bet dollars to donuts that ZA AV is what's causing the
issues. Perhaps booting to SM with networking will get WU functioning as
ZA *should* not be running in that mode.

Re: update from control panel never displays anything - Error 0x8

no luck yet, under safe mode, bits can't run, according to the error
messages, so the fix up via bits admin won't work in safe mode. on the plus
side the services were down, so i didn't get the can't stop the service
message..
am going to retry running normally.
i turned off zone alarm, had no effect either way but it was a good try!

Re: update from control panel never displays anything - Error 0x8

Let's go the other route, as Eddie suggested. Use msconfig and click the
Services tab. ( I don't have Vista installed and may confuse certain
features found only in XP ) Put a mark in the box to Hide all Microsoft
or Windows services. UNcheck all the services pertaining to Zone Alarm
antivirus. Check their website or the Users Guide to learn the names of
all of the services associated with ZA if they're not obvious.
Click Apply, then Close.
Reboot the system, make sure that the native Windows firewall is running
when it's up, and then see if it can update.
If it can't, try rerunning the reset tool. I have a strong suspicion
that the tool wasn't allowed to do all of it's operations due to
interference from ZA.

Re: update from control panel never displays anything - Error 0x8

it's FIXED!!!!
i tried safe mode with networking again, and although it complained it could
not start the bits admin in safe mode, upon reboot, the windows update panel
showed all the available updates. I tried to download them and received an
error in the event log, gave up and went to bed. I changed the automatic
time to update at 6 AM. Booted this morning, and the updates downloaded, the
system shield appeared on the shutdown button and upon exiting, the updates
were installed!!

Thanks to both of you for your help! This was driving me nuts, as I have
two of the exact same laptops, one with the problem, the other without.
thanks

Re: update from control panel never displays anything - Error 0x8

You're mowst welcome. Glad to hear updating is working.
I'd suggest you read up on ZA AV and ensure that the firewall is
disabled and that the AV component is allowing Windows Update to carry
out it's operations. That would include allowing scripting and granting
Permissions to the update components to launch and communicate with the
update servers.
