64 Bit Update crashed PC

One of my computers (fortunately "only" a backup one) - Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit) wanted to install updates last night (it was set to "Download updates but let me choose when to install them") and I lazily left it doing it on shutdown and went to bed, without looking to see what they were... and now this morning it won't boot. I just get a "Your computer was unable to start" box and it goes through its "Windows is looking for a solution..." routine, then re-boots, and round and round we go.... :(

I have managed to get (using the prompts) to a command window, as admin.... I'm hoping there is maybe some way of finding out what the last updates were and uninstalling them?

Unless someone has some better ideas?

(I've turned updates off altogether now on my main computer - bugger it.)
 
Well, no, but kind of figured Windows had done that during it 90-minute failed boot-up routine... in fact there was even a message to that effect if I remember. I almost managed to get in by F8-ing during boot and selecting the "last known good configuration" option, but although this let me log-in, after that all it presented me with was a blank screen.... I couldn't then do anything except power-off :( and now it just boots to a blank screen.
 
well... after the third re-boot to the last known good configuration it's finally loaded Windows successfully!! I guess now I'll create a restore point, turn off updates and hope it survives the next re-boot....
