One of my 2 toshiba laptops is having problem getting windows loaded. It
gives me the error - "unmountable boot volume" on the blue screen. It is
not letting me open the windows in safe mode or any other mode.

when the driver set is loaded, it stops abruptly while loading
apg440.dll

I have some imp. data to save from the hard drive. Is there any way out
to save data without having it reformatted...?

any ideas ???? please......../

What is your computer make and model? How old is it?

Got the answer myself.

If you receive the "unmountable boot volume" error and have an
installation disk, you still have a chance to save your system.

1. Insert your XP installation disk into an optical drive and boot up
your computer.
2. When you see a welcome screen, hit the R key on your keyboard. This
will enter you into recovery mode with a DOS prompt.
3. Now type chkdsk /p and hit Enter. This will launch a utility which
will check for errors on your hard drive.
4. After the process is done, type fixboot and hit Enter to repair any
damaged boot files which may have become corrupted. When asked to say
yes or no, type the Y key on your keyboard.
5. Type exit and press the Enter key to reboot your computer.

If all went well, you should now be able to boot back into Windows
without a problem!

you should find and
borrow a winxp cd
so you can use the
recovery console method
to make the simple
repair to your system.

here are the instructions:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555302

the above should allow
you to regain access to
your computers safemode,
where you can bypass the
driver and copy your important
files.

afterwards, you will have the
opportunity to review the
fault and see if the driver
is corrupted or the physical
device is.

here is some info on that
questionable file:

http://search.live.com/results.aspx?q=apg440&form=QBNO

something to keep in
mind is that if you can
regain access to safemode
then you can work in that
mode towards resolving
the problem.

from my general overview
of the search results, the file is
related to "networking"

Yes, to save data, you copy it off. You simply remove the drive, attach it
to another system, and copy the data off. You will need a USB2 laptop
drive case, which may cost you around $20.

This is very fast and very reliable.
