Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
Laptop/Portables:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=297185
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315403

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without their overlay
software which is not needed anyway.

this is my sis's comp so i actually dont know what has happened. it says
to check that all hardware/software is installed properly. look for
updates, disable/remove hardware. Disable BIOS memory options such as
caching/shadowing (i couldnt find these options in the bios) use safe
mode, which i cannot load.

the techy info is:
***Stop : 0x000000ED (0X86F1B9ED, 0xc0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Thx for the speedy responses, you guys caught me off guard.

Background information on Stop Error code:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms797142.aspx

http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm

What is your Windows XP CD as it is described on the face of the CD?

What is your computer make and model? How old is it?

Also look at the suggestions Jupiter has made.

some of that info was for changing 40 - 80 pins or something very
similar the help and support center
options. the hard drive is a sata drive so i dont think this applies.
you think that reinstalling windows will save the problem.

It may, but do the other items such as verifying serviceability of the
hard drive and reseating the cables first.

yea done that. ended up reinstalling windows all is fine but, device
manager error code 28, its failing over pci device, pci modem and video
controller. it says manufacturer unknown. unable to install wireless usb
adapter. any suggestions. tried uninstall and reinstall.

Make sure you install the latest windows XP drivers.
Do not forget the motherboard drivers.

If you continue to have problems, try a Clean install of windows
again.
You may have a hardware failure.
