unmountable boot volume

I am running XP Home Ed. Everything I have tried today ends at the Blue Stop
Error Screen. Tried booting in safe mode, blue screen. Tried booting from
XP op sys install CD, blue screen. Tried booting to F8, told me me CD ROM
device not installed (I have two in the cabinet) and keyboard error. Only
other note is that the hard drive light on the front of the cabinet is on
constantly through all of this.

And suggestions for starting troubleshooting? Work fine last night and this
morning. This afternoon is a unmoutable boot volume.

Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
Laptop/Portables:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315403

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without their overlay
software which is not needed anyway.

I do not think there is an overlay. The XP and hard drive installation is as
Dell set it up when we received the Demsion 2400 desktop PC. Will try the
other suggestions.

XP and the hard drive are as Dell install them on my Dimension 2400 desktop.
So I do not think there is a overlay. Any way to confirm? Or is it safe to
assume that the manufacturer does not normally install an overlay.......
Please advise. Thanks.

I reconnected the IDE ribbon cable from both ends and work through the
support articles: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=297185,
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315403; and still have the same results.

Any suggestions?

Did you perform a hard drive diagnostics?
You are safe in assuming overlay software is not the issue since
everything is as original.
