"Unknown device" in Device Manager for Intel DG965RY

I've just done a clean install of XP on a DG965RY motherboard twice. I've
got a Samsung HD401LJ HD and a Radeon X1950 video card. Each time I have a
question mark with "Other devices -> Unknown device" in my device manager.
I've installed all the drivers from the Intel and ATI websites on both
occasions and get the same result.

Any idea where to start - I've done "Scan for Hardware Changes" several
times, but it does not detect the device.

TIA

Did you install the latest Intel Chipset Driver Package ? Usually, the
Other Devices entry is the SigmaTel Audio sub-system.

Robert:
Ensure that you have the latest BIOS upgrade for that board. See...
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Fil...dows+Vista*+32&lang=eng&strOSs=164&submit=Go!

Then access the Drivers link on that page and download the latest drivers
for that board.

Frequently, the "Unknown device" refers to the Intel Management Engine
Interface, which will be one of the drivers listed. So make sure you've
downloaded & install that driver.

Hello,

You can use Unknown Devices utility to help identify the devices

Thanks. I've dome everything suggested here. I've installed the audio
driver, the management interface and have flashed the BIOS. Question mark
is still there. Looking at the details, it says under "Location" in the
Device Manager:

"on Intel(R) ICH8DH LPC Interface Controller - 2812"

I've looked for this, but its not on the Intel site and its not on
driverguide.com, which I use. Its available on a few paying sites of
unknown repute. Where can I get a driver for this, or is it best to ignore
it?

There is a LPC Family Interface controller on the 965 Chipset MB.
I would probably Uninstall the device and reboot. Now that you've
got the drivers installed, it should properly enumerate it on the next
boot.

Tried deleting the device and rebooting.
Tried installing latest INF installer from Intel website

No luck with either of these. Maybe I need to download a driver, but where?

Did you install the chipset drivers for the board?

Go to the intel site and fet the latest INF update.

My desktop has a D965RY in it, so I'm familiar with that MB.

Are you using the latest BIOS firmware (1687) >? Express
BIOS (_EB) runs from within Windows.

Robert:
In view of the continuing problem you're having with this motherboard, might
I suggest you contact Intel via email at...
http://supportmail.intel.com/scripts-emf/welcome.aspx?id=

They're generally responsive to these type of inquiries although it's
difficult for end-users to contact their tech support via the phone.

Your BIOS is up to date. Seems like you've covered/run the most
likely fixes for the "Unknown" device. I'm not sure what else there
is to try and resolve it. You may want to follow Anna's advice and
contact Intel support. They do respond ( usually within 24-Hours)
to support requests.

One thing might be to add the System Environment Variable:
DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices
and set it's value =1
Open Device Manager, Click View - tic/check "Show Hidden
Devices". This will allow you to see PNP "Phantom Devices", which
do not appear in the Device Manager's normal view. Maybe you
have other device issues that aren't easily recognized.

Good Luck with it.

I tried that. The program reported that it was unable to install. I
suspect that this is because I haven't set up RAID in the BIOS.

I seem to have got rid of the "Unknown device" icon by downloading the INF
update utility (in ZIP format). I installed the driver for the Intel ICH8DH
LPC Interface Controller 2812 from this file. I was warned that the driver
might not be the correct one for my hardware. I chose the "proceed anyway"
option. Although this device is already installed in the Device Manager, it
seems to be necessary to install this twice to get rid of the "Unknown
device" message. I have double checked that I downloaded the correct driver
file. The details in the Device Manager for this device are identical for
each instance of it.

My system seems to be functioning normally despite ignoring this message.

Should I persist with this setup or should I uninstall the new/extra driver
and leave the "Unknown device" there?

I have contacted Intel Tech support but at this stage the advice is fairly
generic - they've suggested updating the BIOS and drivers as everyone on
this NG have suggested.

Are you experiencing any operational problems with your PC? The
"unknown" device may just be cosmetic.
