I need to uninstall XP. I am stuck on the register page. Can I use the
windows cd to to it, or do I have to remove directory in DOS? Also, do I
have to reinstall XP or can I put in 98?

Yes, boot from the CD, format the drive and then abort the install.

> Also, do I have to reinstall XP

No, you can install ANY operating system you like (other than MAC) - it's
YOUR computer......

If he booted from the CD and formatted the drive, the install would be gone,
there would be nothing to abort.

Yeah, but....

If you install Win98, for example, it very likely won't support your
peripherals as well as WinXP does. Some of them it might not support
at all. Also, if you have a dual-core CPU, I don't think Win98 has a
clue what that is, so it probably won't support both cores properly.
XP Pro can handle a dual-processor computer, Win98 can't.

Linux would do many of these things better than Win98. So no, you
don't have to reinstall WinXP, but you want to think hard about what
OS you do install.

The install program which is what Gordon mentioned runs in memory and
that is what he said to abort. The setup program ran from the CD does
not exit merely because the user chose to have it do a format or delete
of a partition.

Besides using the bootable Windows XP installation CD (to delete or
format partitions), you can also wipe the disk using killdisk
(www.killdisk.com).

That was a brainfart on my part, my mind didn't comprehend what he was
actually saying.

First off I am a she. My computer i s P2 and had 98 in it to begin with, so
it is not a problem to put it back in. I tried booting from the disk but I
was not given the option to format. I had to choose between repairing the
existing one or installing without repairing. I have just reinstalled it.
Now how do I uninstall it?

Are you trying to keep your personal files? To get to a working system
without reformatting? Or can you afford to reformat and start over?

As you've discovered, Windows XP isn't going to run on that hardware.
Unfortunately, I think you're hosed as far as retrieving your old system.
One way or another, you're going to have to start all over with Win98.
Question is, what needs to be saved, and how to save it?

The only thing that needs to be saved are the drivers, all personal stuff has
already been backed up.
I am now stuck in a lop, windows requires me to activate, and well my copy
is "borrowed" so it won't register.
I really think I am going to have to delete it from DOS, but I don't
remember the command to do it.
Any help would be great.

There is no "uninstall" for XP (nor for any operating system).

You can replace XP by installing another operating system over it.

If you want to return to Win98, put the Win98 CD in the drive, boot from the
CD, and let it run (this MAY entail formatting the drive).

You'll have to get the drivers again, or use a Win98 Emergency Boot Disk to
see if you can find your way around and locate the drivers installation
files, then copy them to floppies. Once you're ready to reinstall, boot to
the EBD and FORMAT C:\. Then reinstall.

For further instructions, you should post to a Windows 98 newsgroup.

You'll need to build a Win98 doot disk. Get it from here www.bootdisk.com
Use either the Win98 OEM or Win98SE OEM whatever Win98 disk you have.
Download the exe file to another machine, and then run it, with a
blank floppy disk in the drive. This will create your Win98 boot disk.
Use this floppy to boot your machine. Ensure that BIOS has the floppy
disk listed before the hard disk.
>From the A: prompt, run fdisk to remove any partitions you find, and

create whatever partitions you require for Win98.
Insert the Win98 setup disk, and run setup.exe to install Win98.

Good Luck.

Not exactly. I can't remember off the top of my head if XP Upgrade can be
uninstalled, and I wouldn't want to if I could, but you could certainly
revert from Win98 Upgrade over Win95 back to Win95.
