well sense there is certain individuals that sit on this NG and slam Linux
into peoples faces I decided to give it a go after about 2-3 year break. I
don't want to install it as the main os on my machine so I chose VPC as the
place to install however ubuntu is unreadable in a virtual pc I cant read
the letters on he screen so I chose to install opensuse instead cause it
worked.

so there you have it ubuntu isn't the greatest thing ever FYI

wait....

you are not using the best virtual machine there is through! I don't like
VPC at all.. especially for Linux!

Try vmware server that is free from www.vmware.com
and install the vmware tools inside ubuntu...

Or you can download the free VMWARE PLAYER and then download a ready-made
virtual disk appliance that is ubuntu...
see here http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/954

that way you wont have to install ubuntu and that virtual appliance has the
vmware tools preinstalled!

if you have a fast pc and lots of ram and you maximize the window to full
desktop the quality is good.. you cant even tell if its a normal install or
not...

ok there is no 3d support in VM so beryl and such stuff are not possible..
but thats a general limitation of current virtual machine technology ...

Carl,

Shouldn't you be posting to primate.retard.general? You are in the wrong
group. You should be with your own species.

Just FYI.

Ubuntu is crap, no doubt about it. The default color scheme is
hideous. PCLinuxOS is much better looking. I'm posting from it right
now. Sort of a cross between OS X and Windows XP. More and better
included apps also.

I have Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Solaris 10 and OS X installed in VMWare 6.
PCLinuxOS installs in VPC also, Ubuntu does not.

I forgot to add that all of the above are running in VMWare under Vista,
of course. It's nice to have all of your legacy OSes under the control
of a real OS.

Mike

I run Ubuntu with VPC '07 alongside, OpenBSD & Solaris & I've had no
problems whatsoever*.
I found suse archaic. It may occur if the host (Vista) is using a high
resolution. In Ubuntu, just raise the screen res in it's terminal, increase
the framebuffer size.

Yea...wrong newsgroup.

*That's a lie. There is an issue with the mouse with Ubuntu in VPC, but that
can be fixed with a simple kernel switch.

How did you manage this? I've tried several times and I can't even get
Ubuntu to boot in VPC. It seems to use some video mode that VPC
can't handle. Even booting Ubuntu in the "safe graphics mode" doesn't
work for me.

Yeah, I too have PCLinuxOS on VM. Not bad. But I always reach a point
where I just want to throw linux out the window. Maybe in 10-15 yrs I'll
get over that feeling.

Yeah I know that feeling. Linux is always fun to play with, but the
novelty soon wears off and grim reality sets in.

Mike

So by the same logic, since I recently read in a VIA forum of a person
having problems running xp with vmware on Gentoo linux, the xp isn't the
greates thing ever, and similarly, neither is vista since he's also having
problems there.

nah cause I've installed xp many times on a virtual machine many times
most the Linux distros you cant even install it cause the text looks like a
Atari screen when installing it opensuse is the only one that I found that
is legible to read

Hi Mike,
The below two links should be of help. (easily googled)
Graphical issue:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToConfigureUbuntuForMicrosoftVirtualPC2004
Mouse issue:
http://arcanecode.wordpress.com/200...-704-fiesty-fawn-mouse-under-virtual-pc-2007/

You sir, need to learn a few things about virtualised infrastructure.
Contrary to commoners belief, running software on a hypervisor is very
different from running it on native hardware.

No, I'm not jumping down your throat. :-)

its all good its just it seems anytime someone mentions one thing or another
the instant reaction is someone from either side linux or microsoft gets all
huffy. I choose to play around with both just to simply keep my options
open if something should arise even if I do use vista right now as my main
os it doesnt mean I close my eyes to the linux side of things it just means
that for the purpose right now microsoft does what I need it to do. I
completely respect that people are out there willing to give there time to
create something that is free such as an os but it also has just as many
problems getting it going as vista did for me. All operating systems have
there ups and there downs and nothing will change that.
