two windows xp operating systems

John

I have two windows xp operating systems one on C drive and my clean new
install on the H drive. I want to remove the one on the C drive, can I just
format the C drive. Will some of the progams that I have on the H drive
currantly be currupt and not work.

No.
There is a file on the C: drive telling it to use H:.

There is a file on the C: drive telling it to use H:. -Not if you format
C!

Installed programmes only work with the copy of the operating system
used to install them! This is of course dependent on being able to boot
the operating system.

You'll be lucky if you can boot any OS if you do that. Your C drive contains a
boot sector that starts the system. Remove that and you won't be able to boot
at all.

The way you should have done it was to install Windows XP with the drive
you wished to use in the computer in the master position and the other
drive out of the machine. Install all drivers, updates, programmes etc
so you have a fully functioning machine and then restore the other drive
to the computer. You could then have done whatever you wanted to do with
the original drive.

What was wrong with the original drive? Why did you install a second
copy on a second drive?

It would be helpful to know what is on each drive / partition broadly in
terms of operating system, programmes and data? Also please confirm
whether or not the system is dual booting or not? That is can you choose
which version of XP to boot?

This information may help. Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options,
View, Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden
files and folders" is
checked and "Hide protected operating system files " is unchecked. You
may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make
certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is
not checked. Next in Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is
selected and then select View, Choose Details and check before Name,
Type, Total Size, and Free Space.

You just need to delete the Windows directory from the C:\ drive, and edit
boot.ini so it only reflects the H: drive installation of XP, otherwise you
will still be prompted to choose an OS to load (I assume you are dual
booting).

Don't delete any of the files in the C: root directory, boot.ini, ntdetect
etc.. bassically leave any file you didn't create yourself.

You can probably find specific instructions through google.

ME is in my C partition - while XP is in my D partition. I don't want
to remove XP at all. Just ME.

Correct me if I am wrong but where XP is installed to a partition other than
C:, doesn't the Master Boot Record still reside on C: ?

Which is why it is a bad idea to format C: in this case.

Are you absolutely clear what John has done and his reasons for creating
a second copy of the operating system? John so far has not made himself
clear and we need more information before we suggest how best to rectify
the situation!

My understanding:
He has WinMe of C: and WinXP on H: and wants to get rid of WinMe and boot
directly to WinXP

In that case deleting or renaming the Windows folder on C: and having
msconfig correct boot.ini should do that. He must not format C:

I would rename c:\Windows because it may contain data he wants as far as I
remember Win9x/ME.
