Trying to play games on Windows XP but games keep crashing

HiI am currently trying to do a nostalgia PC at home so I can play them on there, I currently have Windows XP 32-bit SP3 installed and I have all the correct drivers and Direct X 9 installed as well.Some games will load but then become unresponsive, and some install but won't start up, some give me an error message to send to Microsoft and some just give me a black screen but I can still get into the start menu.I need to know what I have done wrong here.
