Touch screen on my surface RT don't work

When I press the power on button the initial screen appears, where I would normally swipe and it would ask for password, we'll the screen won't swipe, I've held down the power button and the screen shows swipe to turn off, but the screen won't swipe, I've looked through some other postings about screen frozen but could not see one that explains how to resolve my problem. Someone please help.... Thanks
