The cursor/arrow occasionally is frozen when I turn on my computer

Hi! This doesn't happen frequently, but just often enough to lead me to seek a better solution than the one I've used.


I have a Lenovo Ideapad Z580 laptop with Windows 8. Occasionally, when I turn on my computer (NEVER at a later point) the cursor/arrow will be stuck in one spot and unusable. Waiting (a reasonable amount of time) doesn't help. I'm forced to use the power button to turn off my computer, which I understand is a practice that is frowned upon by experts as in some way damaging to a computer. In any case, it is time-consuming. Is there a better way to deal with this situation. One website I visited answered someone else with this problem a few years ago by suggesting, very tentatively, using the key combination Fn and F7 or Fn and F4. Does that work with Windows 8?


If you have no solution to this problem, could you at least answer these two related questions: 1)Does using the power button to turn off the computer actually damage it, and should that therefore be avoided? 2)In Windows 8, if you shouldn't use the power button, and can't use the cursor, how can you turn off or restart the computer?
