Hi All,

Recently i have noticed a terrific noise coming from my machine. It is a
kind of whinning noise which i am not to sure where it comes from HDD or Fan.

The HDD's of which i have 3 are SATA. The machine is only 2 years old and i
have not installed any new hardware. It seems to happen intermittanlty even
when i am not using the machine.

Can anyone advise on how i would go about diagnosing the problem?

Any help would be greatly received.

Regards.

The noise you describe sounds as though a fan bearing has failed. Opening
up and using you r ears to pinpoint the culprit is the next move. You can
temporarily stop each fan with a pencil long enough to ascertain if it is
the one causing the probem.

Hi Mi5,

Thanks for the reply.

Just one more question. If a fan bearing has failed would it make a noise
constantly not intermittantly? Also there is just 1 fan on the machine.

Regards.

By doing as suggested you would know if it was the fan.....if it is not the
fan its time to check the HD....a newspaper rolled into a cone held to your
ear with the other end to the HD allows you to "hear" the specific drive and
maybe determine which one is the culprit.

Generally, bearing noise can be intermittent or continuous.
