It's odd and it's happening with increasing frequency, I can get
anything in the main panel, shortcuts to programs or web sites, to
respond ok but anythuing from the start button all the way across to
and including the taskbar won't respond, I just get the basic error
sound when I try. I have to warm or cold reboot to get it to go away.
I'm XPSP2 and Nvidia if that helps at all, any responses welcome many
thanks,

A few things to try:

- Check the fan to the graphics card; this reads more like a hardware
problem, than software. Maybe the graphics card or motherboard is
overheating. The fact that a warm restart helps seems to conflict with
that thought, but if the restart causes the problem to reappear sooner
than a cold start, that could reinforce my assumption that it's a
heat-related problem. If you want to clean the internal cards, use a
can of compressed air; a vacuum, brush, or rag could zap components with
a static discharge (ESD).

- Try lowering graphics hardware acceleration slide. You can lower
graphics hardware acceleration in Display Properties, Settings tab,
Advanced button, Troubleshooting tab. If this helps, you probably need
a different graphics card or drivers.

- Line 164. Restore Taskbar and Desktop to Default Functionality

They're Nvidia and I have trouble with them anyway. I'll see if they
can be updated again. I'll probably buy a proper card, I'm using the
onboard now.

Nah, it won't be them, I'll have a look though.
