tar -k and --keep-old-files what does it do?

Hello,

when extracting tar archive, i dont want to replace ANY files, only add ones that dont yet exist.

the option -k or --keep-old-files

does it mean it will keep only older files than ones in the tar archive or vice versa? Or it dont overwrite anything?
