I have a PC running XPsp2 64bit machine where after you ctr-alt-del and
enter username and password it displays an empty desktop with mouse pointer.
For testing we use local admin login for this, but same with any login- We
also took this machine out of domain. Safe mode boots normal.. I
updated the display adapter driver and no effect. What else could I look
for.

Disable third party applications and services from startup that are not
required. You can do this by using MSConfig or autoruns from
www.sysinternals.com

additionally enable winlogon logging to see where we have the maximum wait
time during boot process. Also do a defrag on the disk. If you are using
roaming profiles, check network performance.
