I have recently had frequent freezes in Outlook and IExplorer. I have
downloaded and installed SP3 no change. I have Norton 360 and even went to
them to get a PC Tune up in hopes of clearing the problem. I have no viruses
and the Norton has fixed everything possible. Nothing has helped.

The Outlook freezes sometimes but the internet hangs everytime I go to
ancestry.com and view images of the census records. I get an error message
"not responding". Usually ccsvrhst is having trouble closing.

It's getting where I can't bearly pickup my emails and searching the
internet is pretty iffy. Ancestry.com is "no way". These are about 90% of
computer use and I do my billing via Quickbooks (thankfully no problems here)
but concerned and frustrated by the problems.

Can y'all help?

Upgrading to (WinXP?) SP3 with the machine in such a state was NOT a wise
idea, especially with Norton 360 installed!...

Well, that's a lot of help. I was having these problems before I downloaded
SP3. I have had a Norton product on my machine since 1991 when I got my
first computer. Are you employed by Microsoft to help people fix problem
with Microsoft products?

I have a problem. Are you able to help or is it you won't?

No, we're all volunteers here, including MS MVPs:
http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/gp/mvpexecsum

The only thing I might suggest would be to start by running a /thorough/
check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log to an
appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or other appropriate forums for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Suggestion 1 - Norton's have released a fixed for their product to go with
SP3. Update your product.

Suggestion 2 - Your issues do not appear to relate to Windows Update
therefore it may be more appropriate to post to a more appropriate newsgroup.

Suggestion 3 - If you're not happy with the volunteers who try to assist on
the newsgroups, then the alternative is paid support.

Thanks,

First I didn't know this was completely volunteer. I thought it was
monitored by Microsoft personnel. From the MS MVP I assumed you were
affliated with Microsoft.

I'm certainly not a computer wiz as many on this help site must be but will
try to follow the procedures you have recommended.

As part of this I spent yesterday trying to fix the problem. I have fixed
it although it is only a temporary fix. That is if I disable Norton and
reset the internet options (in the advanced tab). Start ancestry.com, I can
download the ancestry.com enhanced image viewer then reinstate Norton as my
protect and phlishing protection and it will work until I turn off my
machine. Then I have to go through the same thing. Really not accepatable
since this was not a problem before April or May 08.

Dare I say I think Microsoft may working or really maybe not working so as
to leveage some pressure on Norton and others. Just a thought and as I say
maybe not the best forum to voice it but this seems a very real possiblity as
it works fine without Norton but add Norton and oh my it will not work.

Thanks for suggestions.

Let me say I did not know this was completely volunteer. I assume Microsoft
monitored and somewhat directed the help for thier software.

Please note my responds to PA Bear as I have found a work around but it's
not really a long term fix. I hope Microsoft and Norton can work something
out to help the consumer here.

Assuming that's CCSVCHST, are you aware that it's a Norton 360 file &
Service?

All this suggests that your install of Norton 360 is the source of the
problems, BB, not OL, IE or Windows.

>>> I have had a Norton product on my machine since 1991 when I got my
>>> first computer.

Did you upgrade to Norton 360 from an earlier application (e.g., from NIS
2005)? If so, I've found that it's usually best to (1) uninstall the
current application, (2) run the Norton Removal Tool, and then (3) do a
fresh install of any new anti-virus application or security suite (including
Norton).

That being said, try the following:

1. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key, uninstall
Norton 360 and LiveUpdate via Add/Remove Programs.

2. Make certain that the Windows Firewall is enabled!

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing reading email chatting) except #3 through #5 below until your new
anti-virus application has been installed and fully updated!

3. Norton applications are notorious for not uninstalling cleanly, so Run
this removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

4. Reboot and /immediately/ install Avira AntiVir* (free), or the 30-day
free trial version of, e.g., NOD32**, KAV7***

5. Manually update your new anti-virus application then run a full system
scan (preferably in Safe Mode).

6. Do your problems persist now?

[Don't forget to subscribe to your new AV app or uninstall it then reinstall
the Norton application before the free-trial period expires! Should you
decide to reinstall the Norton application, I recommend not installing any
Norton Add-ons for a while.]

*** http://usa.kaspersky.com/trials/home-users/anti-virus-7/

[While I admire your loyalty, 2008 Norton applications have no resemblance
to the applications Peter Norton wrote back in 1991. I wouldn't allow a
current Norton application in my house, let alone install it on one of my
machines.]

Well, I have to admit that since 2005 I have had more problems with the
Norton stuff.

Yes, it is the ccsvchst file that seems to have problems on shutdown. I
though it was some kinda' internet related file but no I didn't know it was a
Norton file.

Yes, I upgraded on May 22, 08 to Norton 360. I was having problem before
that as I had to reinstall my Norton 2007 back in April. This may have been
when the image problem began but Ancestry.com was also having serious
problems at that time as well.

I think I uninstall it properly but as you know after you click the button
it's on automatic.

Yes, I have my product key.

Well, I have my work cut out for my limited abilities but with your
instruction I will give a shot.

Thanks for you help and sorry for my attitude of my first message.
Frustration is my only excuse.

Thanks again. I'll let you know what happens.
