For about a week previous to this message my computer would shut off out of
nowhere and reboot itself. Now it won't even start. I only get this error
message.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\windows\System32\Drivers\Isapnp.sys

I tried doing as suggested at this link
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/315311

But I can't even make it to the recovery console. I press 'r' like they say
but nothing happens, it eventually just shuts off completely by itself again
after not even 2 minutes.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated =)
Thanks in advance!

Try to perform a check disk by using the recovery console, you will need the
installation media (XP CD):
Try to run the chkdsk /r from the Recovery console and also the Fixmbr:
