I have been having some issues with a nasty pop-up issue in IE7 and I thought
possibly I could resolve the problem by restoring my system. When I try to do
a System Restore it tells me "System Restore Application has encountered a
problem and needs to close." I have tried to go from Safe Mode but to no
availe. I am on XP Pro SP2. I have recently installed a beta version of
McAffee. (Don't know if the latter has anything to do with it.) It's been a
couple months since I have had to use Restore. Thanks for looking at my
problem. Any suggestions on the popup issue woud also be helpful.

Hi Skip,

I suspect the nasty pop-up issue is why System Restore is failing. I would
suggest posting a Hijackthis log to the following site. Please read the
*announcement* at the top of the forum first.

When the system is clean of infection, we will deal with the System Restore
issue.

Ok, good. :)

I assume they had you clear all existing restore points after the cleaning
process. The best course of action now is to reinstall System Restore.

How to reinstall System Restore in Windows XP:

Thanks for your help Bert. Things seem back to normal. I am having a bit of a
problem with IE hanging but not consistant enough to create a thread yet.
Thanks again.
