System refuses to enter standby mode after automatic update

Dear all,

after today's automatic update my laptop cannot enter standby mode any
more. When trying to enter standby, a (german) window pops up saying:
"Systemstandby failed. The Service 'Microsoft .NET Framework v1.1.4322
Update' prohibits the computer entering standby mode. Try to halt the
service and try again."

Deactivating that service helped. But what is it's purpose? Couldn't
find anything about that in the knowledgebase.

Any suggestions?

I would guess that since I have no such service running after I got that
update installed, you probably have a failed install of the update. Open
Control Panel, and be sure the checkmark is in 'show updates', to remove that
update, and try the update again. This time shut down as much stuff in you
system as you can before running it.

Okay, thanks for the hint.
It turned out i had both framework 1.1 and 2.0 installed. Removed the
1.1 installation and it's updates. Now that update service is gone while
its entry still shows up in the services list - gotta remove that manually.

Problem seems to be solved while something surely went wrong...

Control Panel has an app called "Add and Remove Programs." Opening this will
have the checkbox at the top of the list in the "Change or Remove Programs"
area.

I appreciate the help of all on this message board. I created a restore
point and then removed .NET Framework 1.1 and the Hotfix. I restarted
my computer and my standby feature now works. I know that I probably
need .NET Framework or else MS would not have installed it on my
computer in the first place. I went to the Knowledge Base amd there are
many choices to download different versions of .NET Framwork. Don't know
if I should re-install .NET Framework 1.1 or just wait for something to
go wrong when the computer starts looking for it.

Your choice, and it doesn't matter a whole lot. It's not the computer that
will start looking for it, but certain applications may prompt you to
download a particular version of it before they can run. You can do it now,
ahead of time, or wait to be prompted. Either way is fine.
