A while ago, my mother's school exchanged their XP laptops for newer ones and teachers, such as her, could get one of the old ones if they wanted. She's been using one of these for some time now.

Some days ago "some update or something" happened. It probably asked her if she's sure, but oh well... In any case, the result is that the system is "restored" to the state she originally got it in, possibly an even older state, and she doesn't remember what password it originally had (if indeed the currently active one isn't even older than the one it had when she got it).

Is that laptop a deadweight now or is there a way to fix this?

PS: The same thin happened some months ago with her desktop PC, except in that case we had still known the original password. It was strange, because it purged all non-factory programs and some but not all private data.

Edit:

According to the Internet, I would apparently be able to change the password via non-Microsoft means, but is there a way to undo that "restoration" instead someway?
