Are you asking *beyond* the obvious?
(To be able to access/utilize web sites/utilities/etc that utilize it?)

I never had a problem accessing websites. No, it's a serious question. I
have install it today and I see no difference. I suppose IE7 has Java
onboard or it that a lesser capability product.

Some sites require java for certain elements, including game sites.
IE7 doesn't have java onboard...Sun Java would be installed and then IE7
would use it.

I for one had just read that link a few nights ago--the whole thing. But
I'll be the first to admit I'm a little odd! ;-)

*shrug*
No idea.

I had nothing to do with writing it. I am just providing a link to it.

As for reading the whole thing - most people posting in the newsgroups for
the first (some for the thousandth) time would benefit from the
'Introduction' and 'Before you Ask' sections alone... ;-)

it's probably for the thousands of programs that rely on it.

I don't have it installed.
I installed years ago, but
couldn't find any consumer help or explanation on Sun.
Only information I found was for developers or from other sites about security
flaws.
So uninstalled and will never reinstall. If I ever need it, I will pass for
the application.
I don't play online games that require it. Not much to say for it:

- and may be it would be appropriate, for the "first - and the thousandth
posters" who haven't time for the long form, to in some way or another be
introduced to - / reminded of the "short form":

At least being referred to in the "Welcome to Microsoft Discussion Groups",

together with the other links.

well, i guess if you DONT KNOW what it is used for, you may never need it.

java programs like Azureus need java installed.

many online applications require Java. for my work, we need Java 1.5 or
later installed (1.6/6.0 update 1 is current at the moment).

dslreports.com has many tools that use Java.

if you wish to write programs that run in Windows, MacOS and Linux - Java
will allow you to write one progam that works in every OS that has a Java
run time.

there are many, MANY reasons to have Java installed.

Actually, Sun's java packages are a handy vehicle for malware writers.
Why ? Because when the currently installed package is updated, the
older, vulnerable versions are left on the system.
These older, vulnerable versions can be called by the malwarians.
Sun finally admitted this August 22, 2006:
http://mowgreen.castlecops.com/archives/2006/08/sun_finally_admits_that_previo.html

So 'they' say . Don't bet on it.
