Stop Thubds.db file creation / Icon view ?

Is there some way to globally shut off the creation of thumbs.db files
and occasional entrance into "icon view" as opposed to my default of
"details")?

Occasionally XP (MSIE?) slips into "Icon view"... not only is it
annoying, but it seems to leave those little thumbs.db crumbs all over
the place.

Thanks,

Regarding "...shut off the creation of thumbs.db files...: - No can do - it
is a hidden (normally) system file. Check the following:

1. Control panel - File Options.
2. Select "View" tab.
3. Under "Advanced Settings"
4. Hidden files and folders - select option to
hide.

Pretending to be an ostrich doesn't help this annoying behavior.
Instead look at the checkbox just above, 'Do not cache
Thumbnails', and select that.

'How does Steve&Bill want you to view your files today?'
Yes, that and many other things are very annoying. Unless someone
beats us to it we should make a web-site...

Yes, I've already checked that... it still seems to create the
thumbs.db files in any directory that it hits once it's changed to
"icon view" on it's own (the other half of my post) - at least that's
the only trigger I can figure out. I never use icon view for anything.
As an example, it will change to icon view anytime I do a "save
picture" in MSIE.

I think that is what is triggering the thumbs.db generation.

I think you are correct, if you mean 'Thumbnails' view.

To see if i got the same result i reRegistered the [ShImgVw.dll]
file so it is how it originally is in WinXP, then leaving 'Do not
cache Thumbnails' checked, i started 'Internet Explorer' (msIE),
opened a website and then rightclicked a picture on the page ...
and yes for me too it opened the 'Save as' dialog to the 'My
Picture' folder in 'Thumbnails view' - how horrendously
obnoxious! Worse yet, also for me [Thumbs.db] files were created...
Shaken and stirred i came back today to test further but, perhaps
after the reboot, now it behaves like it is described on that
link i posted. The 'Do not cache Thumbnails' setting in 'Folder
Options'-cpl works for me to disallow or allow the creation of
[Thumbs.db] files. Dunno what happened there initially.

If for you the files continues to get created no matter how you
set that option, i suggest you try cutting off the evil closer to
the source, and do what i have done again already and, unRegister
[ShImgVw.dll].

Start : Run... : (Copy and paste the next line) :
RegSvr32 -u %WinDir%\System32\ShImgVw.dll
Click 'OK' and you should get a conformation-dialog.

I guess the WinXP builtin picture-viewer (that there is no way to
configure?) will stop working but who wants to use that when
there are very competent freeware mediaviewers available. Well
known examples for pictures; IrfanView and XnView
<http://www.irfanview.com/index.htm>
<http://www.xnview.com/>

( If you don't like the result, reRegister the file again:
RegSvr32 %WinDir%\System32\ShImgVw.dll
)

Further suggestions along the same path.

( When allowed, save data apart from where WinXP makes
special/special arrangements, like in 'My Documents' and 'My
Pictures'. )
I couldn't find a setting in 'Internet Explorer' to set where
saving a picture would default to, and if there isn't one, for
web-surfing use better freeware alternatives that better let you
decide how you want to organize your data. ... Firefox and Opera.

I really dislike having the open and save dialogs almost always
showing a 'List'-view and no way to let the user *me* decide how
to view things once and for all, without needing to change it
each time. Being shocked by the horrendous 'Thumbnails'-view the
dialog changes to when in 'My Pictures' and subfolders created
there, i am even more thankful that i have 'OpenWide' running.
Now, even when i used Internet Explorer and went to save a
picture, and it still initially forced me to the 'My Pictures'
folder, the contents there were listed in 'Details' view, the way
i prefer it. Phew! You can find 'OpenWide' at:
