Windows 2003 STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND

Hi,

I have reinstalled our W2K Std. Server from a SP4 build CD. I have given the
server a new name, but IP address, shares ect. is the same. But after the
reinstallation SMB communication to file shares is very slow, this can very
easy be seen when we open documents from Adobe Indesign CS2.

I am getting the following errors from a packet captures (from a WinXP SP2
client):

SMB NT create andX request/response:

1) QUERY_PATH_INFO Parameters
Level of Interest: Query File Basic Info (1004)
Reserved: 00000000
File Name: \path\to\the\files\...\...\.....\shell32.dll

2) SMB Command: Trans2 (0x32)
NT Status: STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND (0xc0000034)

This happens for every file the client browse or opens and there is a lot.

Normal file copy, ftp, veritas backupexec remotebackup ect. to the same
server runs with normal speed.
I have checket the information on the dns server and Wins server is correct
and all clients have correct IP information.

It is a standard installation and only the actual reinstallation is the only
thing that has changed. All swicthes/clients/cables is the same. I do not
use any kind of QoS on my switches.

Before the reinstallation I removed the server from the domain and attached
the server to the domain again after rebuild with the new name. Before
reinstallation communication was running without problems.

Nearly all clients are WinXP PRO SP2, some are MAC OS10.

Any ideas what is causing this SMB errors?

Do any of the applications list the old servername as part of a unc path,
such as MS Word's file locations configuration menu?
Are there any old local host files on the clients listing the old
servername?
Are there any old shares on the client in the My Network Places?
If this is also a print server you might want to check that the port
configuration on the client pcs reflects the new servername.

Hi Coraleigh,

I have tried to completly uninstall Adobe CS package and remove Adobe´s
cache files ect.
The local host file is correct on the machines and I have removed "old"
shares from My Network Places.

I have not cheket regarding the local printserver, but I will do that right
now.

I have dobbelt checked there´s no reference to the old server name and
deleted all references i reg.base to the old server name as well. Still
painfully slow though.
I have done a packet capture when we try to open a document on another
server and here I get the same errors:

File Name: \30 dummy - FYN-mappe\shell32.dll
NT Status: STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND (0xc0000034)

Is the above message just a notification that SMB cannot find the file
shell32.dll in the current location and then tries to locate shell32.dll in
it´s own search path instead? And it´s actual not a error it cannot find the
file Indesign is looking for.

I have checked the settings on the Zyxel ES3124 switch and there no
QoS/storm control/etc. configured.

I will try to upgrade/downgrade the Intel fiber NIC and Mylex AccelRaid 352
controller drivers on the actual server to see if it changes anything.

What I do not understand - opening documents is way to slow, but a normal
filecopy is very fast indeed?

Master Browser service is still configd correctly (browstat status), and
that your master browser is not multihomed.

Hi Coraleigh,

dns and wins cache is cleared out. Browstat status seems to be fine.
Master brower is FSMO server and nowhere is the old servername listet.

Have just tried to replace a switch and it did not help. Even tried to
switch the server from a fiber NIC to a normal 100Mbit cobber nic with the
same effect.

here is some more info:

I have installed Indesign on a terminalserver 2003 and opened a document
from here from the same network share.
It´s approx. twice as fast to open here than all my WinXP PRO SP2 clients.

Both the WTS server and clients are on the same switch and all linked up
with gigabit speed. The NIC the WTS is a broadcom and on the client it´s
Intel PRO1000 GT desktop adaptors.

A XP client open a document with approx. 1Mb/sec and the WTS do it with
approx. 3-4Mb/sec.

What is more weird: When we boot the fileserver and let it stand at the
login screen (crtl+alt+del) the keyboard, time/date format is US, but as
soon we login as administrator it changes to DK (we are in Denmark).
What happens here?

Could it be a SMB signing issue between XP and W2K?

Ok here are a few more things to try..

Check out this article regarding your STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND
(0xc0000034) error http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822052

Make sure that your newly rebuilt 2000 server has the right Link Speed and
Duplex set on the nic.

Also..that time/date change concerns me..do you have a time server
configured on your PDC Emulator with clients pointing to it? Is there more
than 5 minutes time differnce between them? I will do abit of research
later on why its not staying DK through a reboot.

I think i read your last sentence wrong with my last post response, you
meant that the date/time format was different, not the actual time zone
changed correct? Well it might be good to make sure your clients are
sharing the same time with your servers anyways.

Link/speed/duplex match so thats not it :(

I will read the links.....

Here´s what I have done so far. I have replaced a single 10/100 swicth with
a pure Gigabit swith.
There a several Gigabit switches and only one 10/100 switch. It seems to
have helped just a little bit to switch to pure gigabit speed, but not
enough at all. It might have something to do with switchport buffering on
giga port contra fastethernet.
And the fact SMB is very chatty.

But I thing Indesign do some odd things with it documents, because I have
added the old servername on the clients host-file and that seems to help
quite a bit when Indesign opens documents. It seems that Indesign do not
update internal document links to external pictures, if the actual picture
is deleted. This I have to check with Adobe.

My though was: if the server is running with US date/time format and the
clients is running with DK date/time format there might be some problems
with smb signing.
