I changed the sound scheme in the control panel, under the associated detail
file to use for "Windows Start". I ran it from the sound scheme "play" button
befor closing the window and it's play lasts for 30 seconds.

When I boot now, it plays, but stops after 15 seconds, I assume - since I
can't hear it after 15 seconds.

I tried this on 4 different XP Pro machines, (my second one and two at work)
with the same results, even with other wav files, it quits being heard after
15 seconds.

I assume this is controlled by a registry key, if there's dirrection to
which one I would appreciate guidence. I used to use a longer file a few
years ago on XP Pro, as a audible indicator. When the music finished, the
boot process was complete. So, it used to work, some "update" must have
changed to setting or some other program is the culprit.

Your ? has been asked here before several times by other posters, I
don't believe anyone has gotten a valid answer that worked.
Here is a link which someone is talking about reducing the files size as a
work around.

If all else fails you could put the sound in your startup folder,so media
player will start at bootup and play whatever.
