If I leave my computer unattended for more than a few minutes while no
applications are running it tries to enter stand-by mode. The screen simply
says 'system preparing to stand-by". The only thing I can do then is to shut
it off (on/off button on processor) and re-start.
I am running XP Home SP2
Does anyone have any idea how to overcome this problem which just started a
few weeks ago.

Probably some virus or spyware program causing interference.

I'm having the same problem, but just found under the Control Panel "Power
Option Properties." On the "Power Schemes" tab at the bottom there are
choices for time settings for System standby and System hibernates. I'm
setting System Standby to "Never" and System Hibernates to "20 min." I have
no idea if this will work, but it's worth a try. I was blaming my computer,
but am hoping it's a software glitch.
