I have been reading numerous articles about the problems that sp3 is causing
and I am afraid to install it. The last article advised not to and to
download from Microsoft Windoes Service Pack Blocker tool kit, any comments?

Use the .ISO to make a CD and be sure to disable any anti malware
programs and I would take the AV program out of MSCONFIG so it doesn't
load with Windows. They say it's a good idea to reboot twice after
installing SP3. I rebooted three times just to make sure -)

And, of course, back up all your date before proceeding.

Baloney! Can you cite where you read that? Done right, few people have
problems.

Before you install, turn off your anti-virus and any anti-spyware programs
such as Windows Defender. If you use a third party firewall, disable it and
turn on the Windows Firewall in the Control Panel for the installation. Once
SP3 is in and working, you can enable the third party firewall and turn of
the Windows Firewall. Do not keep both running.

SP3 will work, but has had reported problems. You've probably seen the
sites to go to for advice on prep work before installing it. Its not
a *required* update yet. Some day something *may* come around that
says 'requires SP3'.

The best protection is a very good backup. If you want to try SP3, its
better to be safe than sorry. Acronis True Image, Norton Ghost and
other image/clone software will make recovery less painful.

But this is really up to you. I did backups and then tried it. I
have too much to lose on this PC.

Where do you read that trash? If you have a clean system SP3 doesn't cause
any problems.

Whenever a new version of *anything* comes out, you always read about
problems with it. But realize two things:

1. If you're reading about problems *here*, this where people come
with their problems, not with their successes. You get a very
distorted view of what's going on in the real world here as someone
once said, "hang around a transmission shop and you will think that
all cars have transmission problems."

2. Most problems, by far, that people report here--whether or not they
are SP3-related--have nothing to do with defects in the software. They
result from people's ignorance, from bad or inadequate hardware, from
old drivers, from viruses, from spyware, and so on. And except for
very rare situations, they always get a fix for their problems, and in
most cases, that fix is a very simple one to implement.

I've installed SP3 on several machines, with no problems on any of
them. However read here before installing it: "Steps to take before
you install Windows XP Service Pack 3" at

Some might argue that there's no good reason to install SP3 but I can
give you a few as to why you should. So long as you don't have an AMD
based system from HP, you shouldn't run into any issues. If you do
have an HP with and AMD processor, there's a fix available for it so
there's no worry. I am not sure about all these computer crashing
stories related to SP3 but I suspect that 99% of it is from people who
have their machines loaded to the hilt with junk apps and have already
had system errors in the first place. I have successfully installed
SP3 on no less than 10 different generations and makes of PCs with
100% success. My own PC is AMD based and SP3 installed without any
issues.

So why not read articles about installing it correctly instead?

I've installed it and it works great, no problems.
I did make a system image beforehand however.

I have installed Service Pack 3 on several computers
and have yet to experience any problem. I would recommend
installing it.

All will be well if you tie an onion to your belt (doesn't have to be a
large onion, I don't think the size matters).

Virtually everyone who had done the onion trick has had no problems
whatsoever.

I thought it was garlic, or was that to keep vampires away?

To "HeyBub". If you continue to read the "I need help" articles you will always see only the
problem.
There are a lot of SP3 users that did not have any problems and never wrote in.
Note: If you got to a doctors office you will see a lot of sick people.

The blocker tool is for large corporate users who do not want the office staff updating to SP3 until
their IT department can configure to the custom software they use.
