I am running Windows XP SP 2.For the last few days sound is not being
properly played on my PC.I booted using a linux DVD and confirmed that it was
not a problem with the speakers. Now the actual problem is that when I play
something on my speakers the sound is too distorted. This is especially when I
play songs or play something that is longer than 5-6 seconds.I have tried
different players to play my song but that didn't work.Even reinstalling XP
didn't help. Can anyone please tell me how can rectify this problem. Thanks in
advance.

Distortion ? - Have you checked the "Full" mixer and checked the
source ( Wave ) and Master Volume sliders ? It helps to post the
Vendor/Model number of your sound card or Chipset based audio.

At the time the distortion first appeared had you uninstalled/updated
any multimedia applications or players ?

It's possible you've changed the "Default Device". I'd check the
Sounds Applet in Control Panel ( Classic View ), Audio (TAB) &
make sure the appropriate device is shown in the device windows.
If so, I'd tic/check the "Use only Default Devices" option.

The easiest fix might be a System Restore to a date before the audio
problems first appeared.

The usual thing to do is to go into the Device Manager (Control
Panel/System/Hardware) and remove all the sound controllers, the reboot so
they are automatically restored.
Hope this helps.

It could also be a Trojan, lurking in the background, burning up CPU cycles
while it sends all your confidential information to the mother ship or
launching 200,000 spams that will seem to be coming from your computer.

Or not.
