I am using Win XP Pro sp2, fully updated with 1 gb of ram. The sound
recorder will NOT record thru a microphone.

I have been using the sound recorder for a long time and this has happened
before, but I can NOT remember how I fixed it.

It has been a while since I used the sound recorder to record thru the mic,
so I don't really know when it stopped working.
Steps I have taken to check the problem are:
Checked the mic on another computer and it worked fine.
The recorder works in all other respects except recording with mic.
In the controls, the box in Play Control for Mute ALL is NOT checked.
The mute box for the Microphone is checked. If unchecked, I get a loud
squeal thru the speakers until I turn the sound all the way down.
In the Advanced Control for the Mic, there is a check in the box "1 mic
boost(+20dB)".

Nothing I have done has helped, so any suggestions are appreciated.

Hello,

Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio > Sound Recording
(make sure correct sound is selected under default device) > Volume > TICK
select under microphone > Close > OK

If it squeals through the speakers it would seem you are in the play section
of your sound control. Click on options and then properties. Select
recording and see if the microphone is selected in recording.

Thank you that did the trick.
