sound on my desktop fine for cd's itunes and downloads but won't play alert sounds

My desktop plays any downloads and itunes etc but, will not play any alert sounds such as log on or log off etc. I have checked everything I can and all seems to be in order. I have updated drivers etc but still no joy.
Can anyone help please?
IT used work fine!
