Today I went to get a file off of my flash drive and when I went to open it,
I got "The disk in drive E is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?"

NOOOO I don't want to format it! What happened to my files?!?!

Check it for errors.

From Windows Explorer, right-click the drive and select Properties, then select the
Tools tab. Click the button for checking the disk for errors.

I did. Nothing happened. I did it with and without the extra
options...basically the window disappeared as soon as I clicked "Start".

Hi Christine,

I used this utility once and it recovered everything:
rest2514.exe
http://sac-ftp.externet.hu/utildisk12.html

Click on it in the list to download it.

Can you try it in another OS; my experience of XP is that this sort of
thing happens, and my flash drive is still useless in XP, though it worked
once. It still works in 98 and my digital pianner.

So don't do anything drastic to the drive till you've checked

Troubleshooting for USB drives

More info...

Ok I just found out that the drive was in use on my husband's laptop when we
got the wonderful blue screen of death. Did whatever happen to his computer
happen to the flash drive as well?

Re: More info...

I've tried the REST2514.exe a few times. The first time nothing came up.
Second time, it said the drive was not accessible.

Thanks, Elmo/Joe.

I bit the bullet, and it worked!

Flash dive now operational.

I had a bit of terror when the NIC driver wouldn't load - but I'd
forgotten it was a real pain to install on 98, using a special d/led
file, but on XP it loaded dead easy from the CD.

(Usual panic; whoops, network isn't there. Oh I remember, use the drivers
archived on my backup CD,; gawd, they won't work, they're 98, I'll have
to d/l some - omigawd, the network won't work, wonder if the motherboard
CD will help, oh yes, this is XP now; bosh bosh all done.

Now I need a lie down and a fag (that's cigarette to us!).

Don't you love computers?

Thanks

mike
