"Some updates could not be installed"??? Please help!

Hi folks, I have jsut changed motherboards on my PC and had to 'repair' XP -
I did this by trying to re-install then windows gave me the extra option to
repair current edition - I didn't have a recovery disk so couldn't do this
the official way but windows seemed to go through the install process and
everything rebooted fine and windows started working again...

I then had to activate XP over the internet which seemed to go fine.

Trouble is, when ever I get critical updates I click the shield and I get a
box like this...

"Some updates could not be installed" - screenshot below...

The list seems to be getting more critical so can anyone please help?!

Olly,

At this point in time, all updates previously installed are no longer
present. Suggest you show hidden files, folders, and system files -
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp

Then do this - Start > Run > type in

net stop wuauserv

Click OK or press Enter

Back to Start > Run > type in

%windir%\softwaredistribution
Click OK or press Enter

Delete ALL of the subfolders of SoftwareDistribution
Close the window

Download and SAVE the latest version of the Windows Update Agent

SAVE them, do NOT run them from their present location
When the downloads complete, close the browser and any other open programs
Install WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe first
If a message appears that the Update Agent is already installed, browse
to the location of WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe from Start > Run >
Browse, Open and add this command after " in the Open line

/wuforce
If the file is located in the root drive and said drive is C:\ the
command will look like this :

"C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce
Press Enter and it will install

Then install WindowsXP-KB927891-v3-x86-ENU.exe and restart the system
When the system is up go back to Start > Run > type in

wuauclt /detectnow
Click OK or press Enter
That *should* get the updating process started again

IF Windows Installer still fails to install, go back to Start > Run >
type in

%windir%\KB893803v2.log
Click OK
Post the above log, please.

Sorry to hijack this post, I am having the same problem and I went through
all the steps you outlined: I ran the last thing you said to do and it told
me the file did not exist. Any suggestions for me? Here are the updates not
being installed:

What happened when the system was restarted ?
Is Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803 listed in Add/Remove Programs in the
Control Panel ?
Was Windows Installer 3.1 (V2) manually downloaded from the MS Download
Center or via Automatic|Windows|Microsoft Update ?

Two things stand out in the installation log:

I found a fix to my problem on another blog...this is what I found...


SYMPTOMS

When you try to install updates from the Windows Update Web site, from the
Microsoft Update Web site, or by using the Automatic Updates feature, you
receive a message that states that the update or the updates were not
installed successfully. However, the updates are not displayed in the Update
History part of the Web site.
You experience this problem if the following conditions are both true:

• You try to update a computer that is running Windows XP.
• You have repaired the Windows XP installation by using the Windows XP CD.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of how the Windows XP repair operation replaces
Windows system files. When you repair a Windows installation by using a
Windows XP CD, the repair operation performs both of the following
operations:

• It replaces all the Windows system files with the corresponding files from
the CD.

Note: This includes the Windows Update files.

• It restores the Windows registry.

The latest version of Windows Update includes a file that was not available
in the release version of Windows XP. This file is named Wups2.dll.
Therefore, after the repair operation is complete, the following situation
exists:

• The Wups2.dll file remains on the computer.
• The registry entries that correspond to this file are missing.

Because the registry files that correspond to the Wups2.dll file are
missing, update installations are unsuccessful.

RESOLUTION

Method 1: Register the Wups2.dll file in Windows
To register the Wups2.dll file in Windows, follow these steps:

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:

a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
b. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
net stop wuauserv

2. Register the Wups2.dll file. To do this, follow these steps:

a. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll

Note For a computer that is running Windows XP Professional x64 Edition,
type the following command, and then press ENTER:

regsvr32 %windir%\syswow64\wups2.dll

b. Click OK on each verification message that you receive.

3. Start the Automatic Updates service. To do this, type the following
command at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
net start wuauserv

4. Exit the command prompt. To do this type exit and then press ENTER.
