several days ago my system went to a slower than snail pace.
It take forever to boot up and when it did my cmos settings were changed,,
it took several tries to get the hard drive recognized and I was able to get
a boot up ( took over an hour ).
Then windows reported it was not activated and I had made hardware changes.
Have been running in select start up but still extremely slow.
I am currently trying to run a full system scan With McAffe but it is going
at 1 file per 2-5 min.
system is new in june...nForce 680 SE SLI m/b ..has 2gig ram (OCZ PC6400
ddr2 800MHz dual channel memory)...Intel core 2 duo E6550 2.33GHz /4MB cache/
1333 MHz FSB /Conroe / Dual core / socket 775 processor.
System worked fine the day before it slowed.. I have tried to get my dsl
working but it has taken over six hours to try and fix/ reset, then hangs
forever.
HELP.... could i have a virus and if so where should I look ??

Certainly, you could have a virus. Or a spyware infection. In fact,
although I can't be sure, a sudden slowdown such as you describe is
symptomatic of malware infestation. I recommend that you begin
troubleshooting by going to MVP Malke's malware removal site at
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware and
following the instructions there

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

a slow pc can be caused
by a variety of things and
not exclusive to malwares,
especially if you already
had some protection inplace.

if i recall, mcafee antivirus
was a culprit for some people.
therefore even a antiviral
can contribute to an issue
like yours.

my suggestion is to open
the startup configuration
(start>run>msconfig)

then go to services tab and
hide all microsoft services
via the option. then disable
all services that are left.

secondly go to the startup
tab and disable all of them
and then exit and reboot.

afterwards, run the scan below:
